100,000 tests a day 19:22 - Apr 22 with 2466 views | tonybied | Anyone else as cynical as me and think one of the reasons we have the capability of doing 40,000 tests a day but only using 20,000 is to build some stock of the test kits. Then the government can claim we have the ability to do 100,000 tests in a day. I admit, I don't really know much about how testing works. Does it work this way or is the reason we can't currently hit that level of testing that we can't process that many tests in a day yet? [Post edited 22 Apr 2020 19:25]

Surely importantly why did Hancock say it would be happening when no one thought for a moment it would. I mean I suppose magically it could, but it's not looking likely.

It's probably precious as it's the figure the government promised us it would hit by the end of the month. Despite that fact nobody can argue the the testing has been a shambles, not nearly enough tests done especially in care home settings. [Post edited 22 Apr 2020 19:35]

It was supposed to be 50/50 split between a test for the virus and an antibody test. But the antibody tests we bought from China don't work. There is no chance of reaching that figure by the end of next week so imo it's a resigning matter.

But just taking tests would count in the figures, all they need to do is take the tests to achieve the goal, technically they haven't got to come back with the results to count. There are mobile drive through testing sites empty, I don't know if it's because people don't want to drive to them or whether they haven't got the test kits. The latter I would think. We bought over 3 million test kits this month that were not reliable. We have also just seen nearly a million masks due to us end up in Italy as the order was gazumped. I'm getting confused now. Are we going to be dropping test kits on Germany?

Because when the Govt were getting hammered by the press they said this to stop the attack as an attempt at good news and to hold people back. It’s like owing a loan shark £1000, but telling him if he waits until the end of the month you’ll give him £2k. It might buy you time but if you can’t deliver we on it you will get hammered even More

He didn’t say it would be happening. He set am ambitious target that he was really very sure that people would take up the challenge and met. In other words totally pointless. A competent thing to do would be to reach out to industry and get an assessment of when and how could be produce and plan accordingly. I also like how he has been somewhat blaming people for not taking tests. E.g. x tests are possible, but only y tests have actually been taken. Again a competent government would be finding ways to get tests to people that require it. He should be sacked.

Semantics either way surely. Same result. “We committed to 10,000 tests by the end of March which we hit. Then we had previously committed to 25,000 tests by the end of April. I increased that goal to 100,000 so we have hit each of the goals we set on testing.” Matt Hancock, 15 April 2020 As for any pretence people aren't taking up testing offers there can't be much reasoning behind that, especially when NHS staff have publicly said they've not been offered. Then the video that was going about last week of the NHS guy who was refused point blank despite asking for one several times.

When they decide the target, it will be achieved. Probably for only one day, but it will be achieved.

Hancock's words are a matter of record. That can't be turned back onto the press. The press aren't dictating how many tests are available. NHS workers have reported problems with getting tested. That's not the press.

It was a stupid, pointless thing to propose. Yes, on 30 April he should resign or be sacked, but not just for the UKs pathetic, confused approach on testing. It’s about time Johnson was properly replaced too. I know he can’t help being unwell, but the country needs a government with some leadership.

Completely agree with yiur last sentence. There has been a lack of leadership since Johnson became ill. It feels like we are treading water. I said a at the time that for a short period we should have had a triumvirate of Blair, Brown and Major leading the country until Johnson has fully recovered.

How about a triumvirate of Jacob Reece-Mogg, Nigel Farage and George Galloway, advised by experts Robert Peston and the BBC hag Laura Kuenssberg? Job done!

Regardless of any of the facts of the matter, and any 'was he/wasn't he' debate, I can't help but think that Boris is thanking his lucky stars that he's essentially been signed off. Another legitimate chance for him to hide away and let someone else take the flak.

Yes I’m sure he is grateful that he came very close to death and will now most likely suffer with cystic scaring on his lungs leading to long term health problems. Absolutely over the moon about it.
