I think many of us assumed we got a stimulus package for businesses... 02:54 - May 9 with 1821 viewsmonytowbray

...and that’d tie over a couple of months and all would be fine.

Doesn’t really seem the case and this is f*cking depressing news. The UK live music circuit was struggling as it is as so many pubs and clubs go under.

Always got a cheap fry up in Spoons though I guess. And on the plus side for the Tories less grassroots art and culture that might put dangerous ideas in people’s heads like criticising “the man”.

The cynical and paranoid side of me gets worse as the days pass.

Depends upon how you handle revenue from performing, if it's a sizeable part or the main source of your income. If as a self-employed musician, then you'll be entitled to the same help as the rest of us S/E (when it comes online in May/June), plus they've temporarily changed the rules on signing on to make it easier/possible to at least get something in the interim.

The venues will be able to get the same help as other businesses, furlough for staff and loans.

Plus, as an encouragement, music/poetry is such and ancient and integral part of all* human culture that it really will never die out.

The oldest known melody which they've been able to reconstruct, Hurrian Hymn No. 6, from around 1400BC:

* Even Oliver Cromwell and the Puritans, who hated music, according to popular history, actually didn't. Only church music, as being too close to Catholicism. They were generally ok with secular stuff. Cromwell actually used to host what we would now call jam sessions round his house.

A unique sector where too many lack a well thought out business plan with no firm long term plans only dreams.

While I just can’t get into your style of music, I have tried, every genre needs to survive. The weak link is venues as without them there is nowhere for musicians to earn a living.

Many venues don’t deserve to survive but they have to.

Now there's a name for a band, if it hasn't already been done - Oliver Cromwell and the Puritans, so I guess the the Round House in Camden was created by the Round Heads???

Live music has existed for millennia in one form of other. Just because current venues disappear doesn't mean the activity does.

Aren't schools always saying they need more funds? Don't schools tend to have a least one sizeable room in which to perform concerts?
Though I guess this all depends on future of social distancing regs.

All we need is someone to invent and popularise the "Two Metres Apart Dance". A bit like the Twist, but with a long stick.

Most don't though - most working musicians make most of their money through sales of physical items(CDs, records, assorted other merch) and performing. The returns from streaming and digital sales are pretty poor.

Music was a labour of love for many anyway. A lot of the bands I like still have jobs when they’re not on tour.

There’s also massive issues on who gets the most funding as venues and it’s all dodgy backhanders going into someone’s pocket. I know A fair few venue owners and most say the same (and I’ve seen the evidence).

I'm not sure what your views on the current lockdown are.
However you can't be in favour of it and then moan about industries suffering.

The obvious answer here is to free under 40's from the lockdown. Let us mix and mingle in clubs, pubs and gigs. This would also help up and coming music as the older bands would be "banned"!

That's an entirely arbitrary number you've selected because it suits you.

I see we have gone from people coming over and social distancing in your garden to full on normality for people in a certain age bracket. Quite an escalation.

Is there a way of the bands performing in venues with peeps paying a few £'s to stream?

You'd get scale if nothing else. I'd love to have an evening of live bands from some amazing pub miles away.
That would give me a real boost.

Its' hard but there is always an upside. Sometimes it's hard to find.

Peace and love peeps.

There is a lot to criticise the government for but they do have to draw a line somewhere; as unfortunate as it is the music industry is like sport - a pleasure but not a necessity. Just like sport those at the top would find it easy to fund those at the bottom with cash to spare but it probably won’t happen. I think club and pub musicians will find a way to start again but the internet might be the way forward.

The number is based on death statistics from the ONS.
Data up to 24th April.

99.3% of all deaths from Covid-19 are over 40.
99.6% of all deaths from Covid-19 are over 35.
99.8% of all deaths from Covid-19 are over 30.

But we have to be responsible, minimise contact with the really at risk age group (>70), continue to wash hands and don't go anywhere if you have a cold.

Why not then create a music streaming site for musicians which passes over a greater share?

Also, if they get a decent audience streaming they will have more chance to sell their gears. No?
Discount if ordered before the end of the gig.....that type of stuff.

I'd look for the upside. Bigger audience = more sales. Unless of course they are rubbish and then nature will filter them out.

Sport is a selective taste, you’ll be very hard pressed to find people who don’t appreciate social hubs of the community.

Venues are businesses like any other bar or club, I don’t particularly want to come out the other side of this with a lack of culture and platforms to spread ideas.

Wouldn’t complain to less Wetherspoons and Bookies but you know exactly who will come out of this on top, sweep up the empty high street and prey on the depressed whilst exploiting wages.

The cynic in me would almost say it’s being done on purpose.
