Identify a random tub of grit for me 18:10 - May 19 with 2422 views

Just a small possibility this could become a nice big thread with all sorts of similar queries and contributions. Probably not- but you never know.

When we moved into our current house, various bits and pieces were left behind (as is often the case). In the garage was a big black tub of sandy grit.

Looks too sandy to be horticultural. Wouldnt expect building materials to be in a tub rather than a bag.

The prior owner was a builder by trade (and built the house). Also like gardening and kept birds at one point.

Any knowledgeable guesses?

Looks partly cemented together, so possibly calcareous. Grit mixed with dry cement or maybe a limestone grit?

Looks to me like the sweepings after you've got all the big bits of rubble off the floor having knocked some walls down (i.e. crumbs of mortar, cement, plaster, etc.).

Its definitely intentional grit which came in a tub. There is another bucket full of the stuff too! You can sieve it and be left with just pure solid grit.
