I am soon to open a bar, it is a sports pavilion where our pitches and 3g are we are opening it as a football and family (we have over 50 teams at the club) bar hopefully open 7 days a week.

We are currently entertaining and pricing up breweries and want to canvass opinions.

The 2 easiest choices are marstons and Greene King. The outsiders are molson coors and Heineken. The Heineken set up is different in terms of installation but cant be used by other breweries in the future. They also seem expensive. We are starting with 4 pumps initially but without cask to start with.

What would you want to see as beer options?

Please remember we aren't having cask straight away until we have a definite idea of trade levels and that this is aimed at sports and families.

I'll be very disappointed if this bar isn't called The Lambert Out.

one of the GK options is a pilsner that you can name yourself. That has just made the shortlist. The Lambert Out Pilsner. Will sell by the thousand in Derby i reckon

For me Adnams (Broadside) or St Peters are ahead of Greene King. I would also look to stock a decent range of no / low alcohol such as:

Ghost Ship
St Peters L/A
ERDINGER ALKOHOLFREI (0.4%)
Brew Dog

(In that order)

These days, I’d expect to see one, possibly two lagers a cider and an IPA. Seems to work well at our local cricket club. The ale boys are happy with the IPA until the casks arrive.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

broadside is cask though

I will have to stock non alcohol for my old man. He won't touch alcohol because he is a full time carer for my mum. He says the nanny state by brewdog is one of the best he has tried

with GK I was looking at

Old speckled hen
East coast

Own pilsner
San miguel

With marston it would be pedigree and 61 deep with carling as well

Coors would give us a better option with Atlantic

Yes

OK, so my insight would be that you would be far better off asking people in Derby. Beer tastes (especially Ale) is very regional, lager less so.

If you only have 4 pumps - I'd go for a standard lager, premium one, one ale and a cider.

Make sure you get a good deal too. Volume will determine your discount and you can get deals that incentivize you on your volume (which will increase your discount if you sell more).

You could also try and tap them up for some sponsorship / board adverts - no harm asking. Will need to make sure it is for the adult pitches obv.

Your last paragraph minded me of the time I saw a kids little league ground sponsored by a local strip club.

I started my accounting career in the beer industry - and I remember when they brought out Hooper's Hooch - which was clearly aimed at kids. Was in a meeting and I challenged the targeting and asked "What you doing next? Alcoholic milk?"

Few months later they brought out an alcoholic milk.

That was when I worked out that big business has nil moral compass and is all about maximising profits, end of. See also cigarettes, gambling, supermarkets, oil companies etc.

Not sure if the craze has hit the UK yet, but the next big thing over here seems to be hop water.

Now your discerning craft beer fan can enjoy a sparkling double dry hopped water.

If it replaces the endless IPAs and opens some shelf space for some proper beer again, thats all good.

Ahh Greene King. The company that had (and may still have) an accounting setup known as "cloaking" to conceal the prices they charge independents, from their tied tenants to ensure that the tenants dont revolt...

Yeah... I don't think that's going to happen. It'll probably just mean even less self space for the beers that are considered to be less fashionable.

Weaker lager - Carlsberg or Fosters
Premium lager - San Miguel or Stella
Cider - Strongbow
IPA - Greene King

People will say these are all rubbish beers, but there is a reason that that is a normal selection in pubs - especially with limited space.

I'm in pubs all day every day, there will be variations on this - but for a small bar, if you aren't doing cask for now, it needs to be along those lines.

Other alternative is instead of a premium 5% beer you just have that as a guest one and cycle through smaller kegs, but less money in that as product more expensive

not only is it a cask beer, its an absolute pita to sell, I think alot of Adnams tenants would be quite happy if they didnt have to have that taking up a spot on the bar anymore, great beer, but people just dont drink enough of it anymore.

dont forget Martsons and Carlsberg had announced a merger quite recently,so that may change things, but definitely worth checking the local scene in Derby first,

Suspect it comes down to cost.

If you are not doing huge volumes, it's probably hard to make the freehouse model work unless you are a pub where your focus / usp is selling craft beer.

we have the potential to be very busy so the breweries are being very competitive. I've been putting the squeeze on GK and he has admitted there is much to play with
