Liverpool would seemingly agree...what a second goal that was. Although they also showed with the third goal that if you're quite good than you can walk the ball into the net too...

I might be barking up the wrong tree here, but doesn't that stat come from a pretty old British football training manual that was seriously flawed?

Wasn't it Charles Hughes or someone (book called FACTS), and led to Graham Taylor and the Wimbledon hoofing imitation for England?

There was def a Charles Hughes book along those lines.

I guess that the likes of Leeds and Leicester do a great job of playing neat passing football and being direct.

Our neat passing football is so laboured that the opponents can get back into a defensive shape AND gave a bit of a breather before we attempt to trouble them.

It was, see the Graham Taylor doc to see Hughes in action. Jack Charlton used it with Ireland.

Out of work manager statement on TV. We are set up to play like Barca. In League One. Will be worth hearing what Nigel Pearson says on Sky Sports later this morning.

Certainly - but Messi's lately-revealed contract seems to be something in the region of £100m a year.

Yes, Charles Hughes, who based his theories on the statistical analysis of one Wing Commander Charles Reep, who observed that most goals were scored from 3 or fewer passes, so his conclusion was that you should get the ball forward as soon as possible. This analysis was massively flawed because then, very few moves consisted of more than 3 passes anyway.
Graham Taylor & others certainly had considerable success adopting these principles.
The FA saw fit to appoint Hughes as Director of Coaching. They don't seem to have learned, having appointed dinosaurs like Stuart Pearce & "Ugly Betty" Boothroyd to run the England U-21 team.

Think they were talking about utilising a swift counter attack - the chances of scoring on the break are hugely improved if passing is limited to no more than four.

Mick out.

The level of technical and tactical coaching taking place at Leeds to achieve this wonderful style of football, which is attack minded, fluid, advanced passing, movement, transition and energy is so far Mick's level and indeed comprehension that your post is beyond farcical.

He also mentioned that you are most at risk against good teams after you have had a corner. Obviously nearly all goals after a corner are swift counter attacks which have 4 or less passes in them.

Certainly true with Town. My heart is nearer my mouth if Town win a corner than if they have to defend one.

A fairer analysis would be the percentage of moves that involved different numbers of passes that then ended in goals. In other words do 1% of 1-3 pass moves end in goals? Do 2% of 4-6 pass moves? etc.

The real answer is that the most effective teams play to their players' strengths and mix it up. Any team that always attacks down the left flank will be less effective than one that can attack down both flanks, through the middle with a through ball, with a ball over the top for a pacey striker, through a flick on from a target man and with set pieces. It is about having a variety of strengths and playing to that variety.

Wait, you mean a manager who has had spells at some of the biggest sides (and international sides) in the world and spent £100m+ at Leeds has been able to assemble a better side than the one put together by a Championship-standard manager for pennies at Ipswich?

Errrrrr.. exactly?!

The point was those trying to equate the style of someone like Bielsa and the level of coaching required to achieve style of 'direct' play, with out beloved Mick, is frankly ridiculous.

Studies show the most likely time to score is within 10 seconds after winning the ball back. Allowing you to capitalise on defence disorganisation before they set into their shape.

We are passing side to side around the back at this point.

Again such studies will be hugely biased by rebounds scored from saves and blocks.

The real answer is a mixture of tactics that suit the players.

We play far too slowly and with few different elements to any attacks we try to mount.

giving the opposition a chance to regroup, get in position, and put into place what they've practiced all week in training.....

remember that goal murphy scored, no idea who against, but a ball got hammered away down the pitch, and at a stupid tight angle he hit it first time catching everyone out
