I think a lot of lower league clubs do this though.
My dad supports Tranmere and the turnover of players is unreal. Some are only signed on 1 year contracts so anyone decent gets snapped up by other clubs on a free (Norwood) and the rest either sign the new contract or move on and you start again the next season with a virtually new squad. maybe less so in League 1. However not knowing what league you're going to be in next season will make a difference.

Isn't it simply that we don't currently know which league we will be in?
Difficult to offer contracts to some more senior players in particular, until we have a clearer idea on budgets.
You might say thats a risky game to play, but I think we have little choice in our current financial situation. |  |

Take your point about the lower leagues especially. L2 churn is massive.
But that's not really why we've arrived here, notwithstanding the end-of-season unknowns.
Lambert spoke about "needing some help", and promptly signed four more loans that fufilled no discernible purpose. While these out-of-contract situations don't relate to loans, they exhibit the same kind of pile-em-high mentality. It all speaks of a club that has got used to waiting, not because time will reveal all, but because we don't actually know what we're doing. | |

If many of our players had any significant value, we'd be securing them regardless, as we've done for Woolfenden, Dozzell and Downes.
The rest of our squad are either too old or too rubbish (often both) for it to be worth it. | |

Exactly, the younger players would be on lower wages too.
No-one worth worrying over too much, if we don't go up, can always offer one or two a deal on reduced wages. | |

This isn't the first time any of this has happened under Evans. We had players like McAuley, Leadbitter and Delaney walk away for free because we couldn't get it sorted. We've also had bloated squad full of loans before as well. People have spent months laying the blame at Lamberts door but most of this nonsense is pure Evans chaos. |  |

I know the salary cap has gone but what about the cap on squad numbers? Is that still a factor. I seem to recall it’s a squad limit of 20 aged 21 or above next season which also would be a consideration in any contract decisions. |  | | |

The club has options on a fair few I believe. The main player who is genuinely out of contract is Edwards. Frankly it would be more of a shambles if we had this rabble committed to long term contracts! | |

I wouldn’t lose sleep if they all decided their futures’ lay elsewhere. In fact, if any contracted players wants away, I’d let them go too if I were Cook. In a bizarre sort of way it looks like he will be in a good position to shape his own team quicker than would normally be the case. [Post edited 11 Mar 2021 19:41]

I assume that's all part of the same thing, but it's a good point. There will be something to replace it in terms of financial controls. At the time of the scrapping they said: "The EFL will now discuss the matter of financial controls and implications linked to this outcome at a series of meetings with its member clubs later this week.” | | | |

The contract situation is a reflection of the previous two managers . But with half the squad effectively unemployed in the summer is giving Paul Cook a massive leg up IMO , as it clears the decks for him , allowing the wages budget to be slashed and freeing Cook up to recruit more easily. It’s a watershed moment for ITFC - especially IF that take over really does happen ! |  |
