Market research - spirits in pubs 13:42 - Mar 24 with 6104 viewsBluefish

As you know I'm opening a family friendly community and sport bar. I need to stock it out so interested to know your view on spirits.

If you were to have gin, how many types would you expect?

Same for rum?

Go for cheap one or pay for premium

What spirits are essential?

How much space have you got? Ten gin varieties is a minimum requirement for any decent establishment.

No where near the space of a traditional pub. I have one spirits cabinet 1350 wide with about 3 shelves

Ten gins might be a struggle. I'd say with popular spirits like gin and rum it's worth having a house and a premium option if you have space. Probably need a Scotch and a bourbon as well. Vodka doesn't taste of anything so just have Smirnoff as everyone recognises it. Could get a tequila in for when people are a bit merry and fancy a shot.

One blended whisky and three single malts, Appleton's rum, Absolut vodka...and if anyone asks for a gin and tonic just mix it with vodka and see if they notice the difference.

Gin will need at least 4 i reckon if we allow for some flavours

Vodka I planned just smirnoff

Do people still drink malibu or jack Daniels or archers?

Amaretto?

Surely anyone dull enough to order whisky in a pub should be barred?

How refined is your clientele? Refined enough for a decent brandy?

The sensible answer..... on 13:57 - Mar 24 with 2603 viewsBloots

....that doesn't involve pretentious "showoffery" is, Gin, Vodka, Whiskey, Rum, maybe Brandy.

A cheap gin, vodka and whiskey, plus a premium of each.

A light Rum and a dark rum.

Maybe a brandy.

Sorted.

You may need Archers and Malibu. JD is worth stocking as well. Make sure you have a spiced rum in your rum selection, Bumbu is a standout on that front but maybe a bit pricey. Four gins is a decent shout if you have the room, gin is probably going to be your biggest seller spirit wise.

Probably stating the obvious, but be flexible.

Gin is currently 'in' but that bubble will burst and there will be another trend soon. 5 years ago, gin was only ever drunk by your nan. Just keep an eye on what others are offering and be prepared to flex the range to suit.

I've been drinking gin for at least 14 years but I get your point on how big it now is. Rum is the new gin for many

Entirely depends on clientele doesn’t it?

Personally I’m a bit w*nky so would want more trendy things like artisan gins and spiced rums, but unless you’re expecting customers to come in and start looking at the bottles like some sort of menu then really your list should just look something like the below to just cover the ‘vodka and coke’ type orders:

Vodka - Smirnoff
Gin - Gordons or perhaps Tanqueray
Whisky - JD & Southern Comfort, perhaps a scotch
Rum - Captain Morgan’s & Morgan’s Spiced
Malibu
Archers - is that still a thing?
Disaronno maybe
A brandy
Probably something else obvious I’ve forgotten

Also depending on space maybe a cheaper non-brand option of each, or alternatively a premium

Personally that list makes me shudder but it covers most bases!

EDIT: as an alternative risky option just get the obvious ones and then wait and see what you’re asked for!

EDIT 2 - in the time I’ve typed that I see everyone else has basically said the same thing, so yeah do that

Well, if you are suggesting going down the novelty drinks route then why not:

I'm not sure that's true, Gin is a bit trendy at the moment though it has been that way for a while now, but the reason it's risen to that place is at least partly due to the change in law that has allowed for craft gins and the like which just couldn't happen previously. I believe Sipsmiths was one of the key instigators of that, I don't think it will go away.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

On the Gin front I'd go Bombay Sapphire, Adnams Copper House and a Rhubarb/Fruity number as it seems all the rage.

Rum - Sailor Jerry or Captain Morgan.

The days of Gordons, Bacardi/Malibu are long gone.
