Market research - spirits in pubs 13:42 - Mar 24 with 6107 views | Bluefish | As you know I'm opening a family friendly community and sport bar. I need to stock it out so interested to know your view on spirits. If you were to have gin, how many types would you expect? Same for rum? Go for cheap one or pay for premium What spirits are essential?

Market research - spirits in pubs on 14:57 - Mar 24 by hype313 | On the Gin front I'd go Bombay Sapphire, Adnams Copper House and a Rhubarb/Fruity number as it seems all the rage. Rum - Sailor Jerry or Captain Morgan. The days of Gordons, Bacardi/Malibu are long gone. |
I've got an orange gin in the cupboard that might as well be fruit juice when mixed with tonic. Lethal stuff.

Market research - spirits in pubs on 13:53 - Mar 24 by Bluefish | Surely anyone dull enough to order whisky in a pub should be barred? |
I've noticed that whisky is mostly ordered by people (sorry, men) who have already had a minimum of 3 pints of beer or more likely lager. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I mainly drink vodka when I go to pub and would disagree with others who say it don't matter what sort I would recommend you have a bottle or two of Adnams East Coast can charge a little more for it and its very morish also a mix of a few rums is good as people do like to try them all

I think you will find that it is the lager drinkers who go on to the blended whisky after three pints, the intelligent people in the pub will be drinking beer from the cask at a sedate pace before having a double single malt at the end of the evening before walking the most interesting woman in the place home...

Yes, I still enjoy JD and coke. Pretty popular I’d say.
Market research - spirits in pubs on 17:09 - Mar 24 with 912 views | You_Bloo_Right | Whatever spirits you decide on expect to face tougher decisions regarding mixers. If you're going full on trendy (and I expect you won't be) you will be awash with Fever Tree and the like - artisan pink citrus tonic water, Mediterranean tonic water, aromatic tonic water, the list is bloody endless. Whilst some of these may be pleasant you may end up needing more space for the mixers than the spirits they accompany. Perhaps just "full fat" and "light" versions of the standards tonic bitter lemon ginger ale lemonade cola Then what about fruit juices? Orange remains a necessity perhaps, grapefruit less so. Tomato? Do people still drink bloody Marys? (Worcester sauce may be required, tabasco for the adventurous). Cordials? I'd say lime is a must. Maybe orange? Blackcurrant? Peppermint used to be popular with dark rum but maybe I'm showing my age there. And of course ice. I assume you have that covered.

..........and this Zombie, is demonstrably accurate and is also why you're such an erudite poster. I fail to see why a customer who knocks back Girlsberg or Fosters then finishes off with JD & coke before insulting the barmaid after honking up in a urinal is ' interesting.' A decent malt should always be at hand behind the bar.

Market research - spirits in pubs on 13:49 - Mar 24 by Herbivore | Ten gins might be a struggle. I'd say with popular spirits like gin and rum it's worth having a house and a premium option if you have space. Probably need a Scotch and a bourbon as well. Vodka doesn't taste of anything so just have Smirnoff as everyone recognises it. Could get a tequila in for when people are a bit merry and fancy a shot. |
Can’t have a boozer without tequila shots available!

Market research - spirits in pubs on 14:08 - Mar 24 by C_HealyIsAPleasure | Entirely depends on clientele doesn’t it? Personally I’m a bit w*nky so would want more trendy things like artisan gins and spiced rums, but unless you’re expecting customers to come in and start looking at the bottles like some sort of menu then really your list should just look something like the below to just cover the ‘vodka and coke’ type orders: Vodka - Smirnoff Gin - Gordons or perhaps Tanqueray Whisky - JD & Southern Comfort, perhaps a scotch Rum - Captain Morgan’s & Morgan’s Spiced Malibu Archers - is that still a thing? Disaronno maybe A brandy Probably something else obvious I’ve forgotten Also depending on space maybe a cheaper non-brand option of each, or alternatively a premium Personally that list makes me shudder but it covers most bases! EDIT: as an alternative risky option just get the obvious ones and then wait and see what you’re asked for! EDIT 2 - in the time I’ve typed that I see everyone else has basically said the same thing, so yeah do that [Post edited 24 Mar 2021 14:10]
