89-90 11:00 - May 11 with 1544 views | Sharkey | Two questions about 89-90. 1. Was Romeo Zondervan the captain? (He seems one of the less likely Town captains to me, but maybe that's perhaps because I once saw on him on the bench at a pre-season game in Sweden in the mid 80s and he spent almost the entire game with his back to the pitch, checking out the girls in the crowd.) 2. At the time, was Sergei Baltacha usually referred to as Russian, (rather than Ukrainian)?

In 89, was it really still so that all people from the USSR were casually called 'Russians'?

I think that John Lyall made him captain when he took over in 1990.

89-90 on 11:31 - May 11 with 1408 views | Churchman | Romeo was club captain 87-90. He was a really good footballer, making 274 appearances in an 8 year period. The team wasn’t the best much of the time he was here, but it was pleasing he was around for the 92 promotion season. Subject to a rubbish memory I think Sergei was always referred to as Russian. There were even a few red hammer and sickle flags when he made his debut against Stoke. Scarily, I suspect Ukraine will be Russia (USSR) in the not too distant future, given Putin’s ambitions.

89-90 on 12:23 - May 11 with 1219 views | BluePG | On Zondervan, why didn’t we keep him after we’d got promoted to the Premier League for the first time? Slightly too young at the time to remember why!

"too young"?! Think he was out of contract, 32/33yrs old and wanted to go home.

89-90 on 12:34 - May 11 with 1187 views | The_Last_Baron | Romeo was definitely the captain at the start of the 89-90 season, remember his captain's page in the opening programme of the season, raving about how much the players liked the new Italian style Umbro shirts. I believe Linighan took over the role when John Lyall was appointed. Zondervan was more than a decent player for us, always had time on the ball.

His contract ended and he wanted to return to the Netherlands.

89-90 on 12:54 - May 11 with 1133 views | Bluespeed225 | Had a great drunken chat with Romeo in Chicago’s in 96/6. He was Gus Ulenbeeks agent and Gus had made his debut, I’m thinking against Grimsby. Anyway, he was played up front, had pace in buckets, which had got him into about 4 one on ones with the keeper, all of which he missed. We pointed this out to Romeo after we’d been out all day, he was top drawer and explained Gus wasn’t a striker, give it time! I loved Gus, and I loved a Leo Sayer in the90’s!

I don't think that 442 article calls him Russian does it? It refers to him as Soviet, which he was. But yes, most referred to him as Russian at the time, in the same sense that Russia was a metonym for the USSR, even though Sergei was Ukranian.

One of my favourite players from that era, hence my name in tribute. A highly technical but underrated player who kept the team ticking over. Could’ve done with someone like him this season!
