UEFA Cup 1981 09:54 - May 10 with 2953 viewscharpur

Hello, I am a journalist at The Athletic.

I would love to speak to anyone who attended the 1981 UEFA Cup second-leg final and has some interesting stories to tell. Boat trip over, interactions with players/manager, celebrations, memorabilia, any nuggets would be great.

UPDATE: Thank you for all your help with the research.

John Wark and Russell Osman share their stories in the piece, enjoy!

That's not lazy journalism — but it's a lazy phrase from you and one that, the more it gets used, actually does the people who coin it few favours. Not that they'll ever realise it.

Lazy journalism? Getting fan accounts of big events? Na, probably the complete opposite of lazy!

...and she was directed here by me, so genuine.

Journalism can be done in many forms

Why wouldn't you come on a busy fan forum and interact with people who like posting stuff about Ipswich when they aren't talking about Cheese, CoVid, Brexit and Derby County (in that order)

Asking sources for information is something journalists do a fair bit.

And it will be until time travel is invented.

Paging PJH...

Ha, well I was there.

Went by ferry from Dover with my dad and a couple of mates.

I remember looking in various sex shop windows but did not go inside.

Remember various ladies sitting in windows in Amsterdam.

We stayed overnight on the night of the match but I can't remember where.

Had a couple of drinks in Amsterdam after the game.

We were on the back of the coach and I remember having eye contact with a (presumably) Dutch lady driving a car behind us and she gave me a nice wave.

I left some chicken bones on the coach overnight and my dad and mates complained about the smell in the morning.

Went to a football match as well and it was all very easy when Frans Thijssen put us 4-0 ahead on aggregate but not so easy after that.

Nothing scandalous happened, I was just a 15 year old who went with some bigger boys in a Cortina and slept in the blooming thing. Naturally alcohol, drugs and prostitutes were involved but this is a time when life was for the living.

It was very lively few days but anyone who was lucky enough (and old enough) to have gone will concur that life is now relatively boring and sanatised back to what it was then.

It was not exciting as in the Lucan train journey scale of things that is for sure.

No it was not with the WI, it was through official ITFC travel though or whoever they used at the time.

No it isn't, what do you think he should do - phone up everyone in the Ipswich phone directory (if such things exist) and ask if they went to Amsterdam in 1981?

Explain what's lazy about it, as a journalist, I'm genuinely interested in your thought process on this.

Going via Dover seems a long way around. I went on official travel that was basically day return. Train to Harwich I seem to remember and then ferry to the Hook. Coaches were laid on there to take us direct to Amsterdam and then straight back after the game and then night ferry back to Harwich.

went by plane.
a travel agent in ipswich buttermarket (j.easter if my remember correctly) was offering match tickets plus chartered plane from southend airport. plus champagne on the way back if we won.
so went with that. first port of call was dam square, it was packed out with town supporters.
always remember a lady of the night moaning ,that ipswich fans only wanted to drink, no jig jig like the derby fans who used her personal services, a season or two earlier.
on to the olympic stadium , which seemed to be covered in ivy.
then found out our tickets were behind the goal in the away end.i remember the first goal for the town, which was at the other end. the rest is a blur ,due to the drink catching up with me and being sick everywhere. next thing i can remember
is waking up on the plane asking where the champagne was , only to be told we are now landing at southend airport

forensic experts say footers and spruces fingerprints were not found at the scene after the weekends rows
