The R number has shocked many scientists, it's incredibly infectious. Could easily see 100,000 cases today or if not then by the weekend.
The restrictions used previously simply aren't enough to reduce the R to levels that will stabilise the infections like they were for Delta. We could keep Delta R around 1 with only a few restrictions, there seems to be no chance of doing that with Omicron.
So it's fairly simple, a decision has to be made. Do we accept that and let it rip and end up with an unknown maximum number of infections or do we impose tighter restrictions knowing it might reduce the R enough to stabilise but might be an overaction in hindsight if Omicron turns out to be much less severe overall?
That's pretty much where we are now and there will be advocates on both sides.

I'll say again - I've caught 2 x "ordinary" colds outdoors when the wind was blowing from unmasked people 2m away, to me. If ordinary cold viruses can do that, then just think what Omicron could do.
I think/hope, from reports of the queues around the blocks for boosters & of reduced numbers at social events, that even those who were previously doubters/waverers re the impact of Covid are finally wising up.
People might be less inclined to go after last night anyway, in which case it's posssible another wretched Town performance could actually save lives. It's an ill wind etc. |  |

I don't you can take it seriously when someone is comparing a variant in a climate such as SA and the UK going into winter where everyone's immunity is much lower at this time.
So no. I won't be listening to that doctor as she clearly doesn't understand immunity differences. | |

Totally agree and I'm pretty sure you can guess which of those two camps I'm in.

The two countries are clearly not the same.
We recorded nearly 4 times as many cases of covid yesterday as they did and it's rising at an exponential rate in the UK. Given this comparisons are not really that applicable.
Given that there are other factors to consider outside severity such as if the NHS can cope with the sheer volume of cases we are going to experience.

Ive decided not to go. I usually don't let COVID get in the way of my social plans, I'm not worried about getting it and have been to every home game this season.
I'm looking forward to family plans over xmas and have decided its not worth the risk for myself and them. Will be at the Wycombe/ Rotherham games once xmas has passed [Post edited 16 Dec 2021 11:44]

You should be more concerned about passing it on to others ,before you are aware you have been infected, than being inconvenienced by having to isolate.

What has happened there is not necessarily an accurate guide to when it hits ageing populations in the West.
