There have plenty of rubbish players who’ve signed for Ipswich, particularly in recent years. Real turkeys. However, there are some who’ve turned out brilliantly. For example, I give you Mark Venus.

A real makeweight in the Sedgley deal with Wolves. Initial thoughts were what on earth are we taking that load of rubbish with a comedy name on for? What is Burley doing lumbering us with a second rate old bloke of 30? Squad fodder. Talk about getting mugged off by Wolves!

Errrr, six years, 148 appearances, 16 goals, a promotion, a short stint in the PL and a player of the year award, how wrong can you be? It was Wolves that got mugged off.

He was absolutely terrific for us and a far better player than I thought he would be.

There are plenty of others.

Jamie Clapham, had to ask who he was when I saw him warming up for his first game didn't even know we'd signed him...thought we were getting desperate....turns out GB knew his stuff

I know it's fairly premature in terms of achievement, but Aluko had a few people scratching their heads when he signed. That's not to mention an absolutely stinking debut.

Now on his day he's one of the nicest footballers to watch at the club.

Either I'm a great judge of character or I just give most incoming players the benefit of the doubt, because I'm struggling to think of any more.

Honestly Tyrone Mings for me.
I read about it and thought wow is this our ambition.
Criticised Evans (rightly so) but Mings well and truly proved me wrong.

Poll: Apologies I'm bored. How many signings will we have by Plymouth at home.

How about Sylvain Legwinski? Old, sad has been picking up two years pension thought I when he signed in 2006 age 33. Why, Just why?

He was actually still a really good player, especially in his first season. Legs may have gone, but boy could he play. Scored against Norwich too. 47 appearances, 7 goals. A good signing.

People were definitely quick to moan about the Sone Aluko signing

I was quite excited by that signing.

Wasn't sold on Shefki though when he signed!!

I was underwhelmed when we signed Alan Lee.

Alan Lee. At the time I thought that he was an awful signing but he proved me wrong. Also, to a greater extent David Johnson, a so-so track record with Bury and we paid over a million. AMA ing bit of business.

I'm with you on that one, partly because I loved Sedgley as a player too.

Ian Marshall!!

I wasn't living in Suffolk and all my mates supported the usual big clubs, they took great pleasure in telling me we'd signed some donkey from Oldham.

Turned out to be a cult hero.

Probably Armstrong for me, knew little about him except he was playing in Boro's reserves, don't think he had scored many for 2 or 3 years before. Was never prolific for us but was an important forward who scored some very important goals.

Budgieintheroom will be along shortly to reiterate his point that Burley signed lots of donkeys.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Complete unknown on loan, hadn't had a great time before he came to us. Yet ended up being a hero.

a niche perspective

Had played for Ajax and had a Holland cap, I was excited by that one.

May have been good on Championship Manager too.

Going back a bit, Arnold Muhren. I’d never heard of the bloke. Ok, he might be Dutch, but so is Edam cheese. Talbot had gone and there we were bringing in this bloke.

I was even less impressed when I saw him play. Didn’t seem to be able to tackle, shoot, looked weak, not involved what on earth was Robson doing wasting money on him? He won’t last long here.

It didn’t age well.

Shefki Kuqi perhaps? An uninspiring free from Shef Wed

I remember being underwhelmed by the signing of Paul Cooper who had a terrible debut

But as many have said Taricco must win this one hands down

Agree I remember his debut in a 3-0 home loss against Liverpool (if my memory is not playing tricks)
I wasn’t overly impressed,how wrong could I be!

I recall being underwhelmed by the arrival of Paul Mason, and I thought Mowbray looked very poor in his first few games and wasn’t confident he would come good. More recently, I was worried Walton wasn’t an upgrade following his debut against Bolton. I don’t think my services will be needed by the ITFC recruitment team.

I was there as well.

The ball spent most of the time going over his head and he looked completely lost. Once we played to his strengths however, what a player!

Donacien.

After watching him play for us after we first bought him I thought he was rubbish for what we paid. Just couldn't see it at all.

Proved me massively wrong though.

I was hoping that there would be a problem with his work permit and we would not be able to sign him permanently.

I hang my head in shame.

I was at the game. The ball was sailing over his head, whenever we got hold of it. Thought it might have been Man U but having checked you are right - it was Liverpool.

Totally with you. He’s only recent but I can’t think of a single player in my town following days (over 50 years) that has so dramatically turned things around. Stunning really - from the willing trier, but actually quite useless player to one who is first on the team sheet and regularly MOTM is really a metamorphosis.

Daryl Murphy.
When we signed him permanently I felt he would be good for the team overall but not the 20 goal a season striker that we required, after all his stats up to that point indicated he wouldn't even get into double figures. I was calling for us to buy that 20 goal a season striker and was disappointed when we didn't... oh how wrong was I
