I'm very meh about the royal family 19:25 - Sep 9 with 2357 views | gtsb1966 | or I thought I was. Never really cared what was going on in the royal household and would change channels when royal news came on as i found it boring yet I find the Queens death incredibly sad. Anyone else the same?

It's the same here. I feel incredibly proud of our country in these circumstances and appreciate the end of an era, albeit a gilded one. But everyone dies at some point and she's certainly had a good life. Just wish her family were nicer, but then I think Charles will weed out the rot and we'll never hear of it again. By rot, I'm referring to Andrew mainly. I wouldn't be surprised if Edward and Sophie are upgraded to Duke and Duchess of York. They've both been bulwarks recently.

It's quite surprising innit.

I'm very meh about the royal family on 20:10 - Sep 9 with 1888 views | factual_blue | I'm theoretically a republican, and can't abide the archaic flummery around the House of Windsor. BUT....looking at the way a republic can go with an elected head of state, I now probably think better to have a slightly dotty family passing the role on to each other than a trump or a boris being elected.

I'm very meh about the royal family on 20:13 - Sep 9 with 1876 views | SlippinJimmyJuan | I felt some sadness at the news yesterday, although I have to say the wall to wall coverage of people saying vague and meaningless things and social media being awash with black and white arguments about very grey issues is starting to wear thin. I can't understand why there needs to be a journalist permanently stationed outside the Palace as if the situation is suddenly going to change. Worst of all for me is the competitive grieving. So many broad statements just being chucked about by some. It's surprisingly hard to avoid the news, which I guess is why so many people seem so worked up about it. I don't have any problem with people paying their respects, I don't really care that they've just turned BBC 1 into a 24 hour royal family livestream, I just feel a bit like the level and lack of quality of said coverage is a bit disingenuous.

I'm very meh about the royal family on 20:14 - Sep 9 with 1866 views | eastangliaisblue | I've never cared for the royal family and the system they represent. The whole Prince Andrew business has always left a sour taste in my mouth as well. However since the Queens passing I've found myself listening and reading the stories about her and I'm starting to appreciate the good she has done for this country. [Post edited 9 Sep 2022 20:15]

Thanks, you’ve saved me the effort of typing. Very much agree. No disrespect intended, but I’m more saddened by the news of Stewart. More of a connection there. He’s impacted my life, albeit briefly, while the Queen hasn’t despite being a constant presence. Still, genuine RIP and thoughts and best wishes of course. And the few vile people trashing her memory at this time disgust me. Not the time.

I am used to being the anti-Royal in the room so some of the negative sentiment in the past 24 hours or so has surprised me. Some of it has been disgusting as you rightly say, some mind-boggling disrespectful. And some of it unfortunately expected. I suppose we are seeing the end of the institution, even if it is a rather drawn out affair.

I'm very meh about the royal family on 20:33 - Sep 9 with 1766 views | Oldsmoker | It think the whole thing is sad too. But, like you, In the past I have switched off the royal news when its on and programs such as The Crown hold no interest for me. I am switching off these royal tribute programs that are currently flooding the channels too. I realise the nation has to mark this moment properly as the whole world is looking at us. I have one tiny complaint - we shouldn't have cancelled this saturdays football as next saturdays football will definitely be cancelled too. I know the Queen would have wanted us to complete this saturdays fixtures. (The Daily Fail is making outrageous claims about what the Queen would have wanted so why can't I)

Yes, as the acknowledged expert on the British constitution, Prof Vernon Bogdanor, says: if we were starting from scratch there is no way we would choose to have an hereditary monarchy. However for the sort of reasons you hint at he says it is now better than any alternative. I think I agree.

We always take it hard when someone who has meant something to us in life is taken from us. Sir Bobby Robson meant a great deal to me and when the papers took the p*ss when he was managing England my p*ss boiled. Marcus, just like Sir Bobby, made our dreams come true and that's why it's gut-wrenching when they are defeated by diseases such as cancer and MND. Perhaps these royal followers have a much deeper connection with the Queen - she was their centre forward - and that's why they're taking it hard.

Can't see the King taking York from one and handing it to another but Edinburgh dukedom is available. Maybe Edward could have that if Wessex isn't deemed grand enough...

I'm very meh about the royal family on 21:04 - Sep 9 with 1647 views | Nthsuffolkblue | Yes, pretty much the same. I can see both sides of the argument for having the monarchy and have no strong opinion on it. However, the Queen was most definitely a remarkable individual who took her role seriously and was a credit to our country. She will be sorely missed and deserves every respect. It will be interesting to see how King Charles III compares.

I'm very meh about the royal family on 21:26 - Sep 9 with 1569 views | Sarge | Sort of flipped the other way. Very meh, and felt a bit sad when I heard the news confirmed after expecting it for hours. But I find this competitive grief nauseating and have become a full blown republican in the last 12 hours. Of course, had the frankly ridiculous decision to postpone football not been taken I would probably still be a bit more aligned with what the BBC is telling us is the mood of the nation. I'm very meh about the royal family on 21:40 - Sep 9 with 1514 views | Simonds92 | The Royal Family as a collective has never worried me too much but I've always loved the Queen. She represented the best of our nation but she also has that personal touch, she is very much like my grandparents and I'm sure millions across the country feel the same. I'm gutted.

Edward and Sophie are great aren’t they. I like your ‘bulwarks’ description, they really are a couple that increasingly model all we’ve come to expect from the queen herself. Plus Sophie is rather beautiful!

Possibly, although I’m also slightly surprised at the strength of mourning some people are displaying. So maybe there’s some life in it yet. I’ve no idea what’ll happen, but some people see them as relevant. Charlie wants to slim them down doesn’t he, so maybe we’ll see some changes. I don’t know how he gives them a purpose though - they don’t seem to do anything tangible, just exist (which may be enough for some).

I don't know what's happened to it since June, but the Labour MP for York put forward a Removal of Titles bill (partly because her constituents unsurprisingly don't like the current DoY). However, as this bill would also give the monarch the power to remove any title, I'm not convinced it'll get through the Lords.

Absolutely this and therefore life should carry on as normal.
