If it is the play-offs... 09:36 - Jan 15 with 5570 viewsITFCBlues

Does anyone think we'd have a chance?

With our mental fragility and even the defensive weakness we continue to show, there will be better equipped sides capable of winning then I think.

We are still struggling against the top teams, we've improved winning the odd game but i'm not sure we can go and win 2 from 3 games

Wycombe would do us, I'm quite confident of that.

Funnily enough, think we would do most teams at Wembley - but not confident at all that we would manage to get there first.

I know it’s a knee jerk question, but of course we’d have a chance.

None whatsoever. Ipswich always choke in the clutch, it’s been like this for years.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

I'd have us as favourites if it came to the play offs. Two legged semi means there's less chance of a 'lucky' result where one team gets a penalty/red card in their favour and goes through. The big open spaces at Wembley we'd outplay anyone else I'd think. Still think there's a good chance of top two though.

We’d either be s5ithoused by Wycombe or lose to a McGoldrick goal and have that scummer Warne laughing at us.

results against the current playoff sides W1D2L0, by no means impossible.

If we do end up in the play-offs, I hope that we know it's going to be them from a few weeks out rather than starting the final day in 3rd, going 2nd for 25 minutes and then finishing the day back in 3rd again, so that everyone has a chance to approach them without too much disappointment/fear.

Of course we have. We are above those teams for a reason and we will get stronger with the new additions.

The fear always is that you might play a team risen from mid table on a good run of form. We are currently 11 points ahead of six ie 25 % better in points terms.

Would be a sickener to miss 2nd place by one point then have to face a team a dozen or so points below.

Lottery isn’t it. Given our record against upper sides I wouldn’t bet money on us.

We always talk about these 'big open spaces' at Wembley but Portman Road is something like 8 yards wider than Wembley

Probably not as long straight though I suspect

I know they add a bit of spice to the end of the season and there are some financial incentives but I think the play-offs should be scrapped as it’s unfair for a team who performs much better over the whole season to lose to a team who have performed less well in a two-legged or sudden death match.

Look at what they’ve done to MK Dons. Third last season, lost in the play-off lottery and they could now be playing in the Championship rather than at risk of being relegated to Lg2. Hopefully that’s not us next season.

But that’s exactly what happened when we played West Ham in the PO’s! They went up yet were something like 11/12 points behind us. They squeezed into the PO’s on the last day and played us , and we cocked up in the home game . Forrest conceding a ( shock amazement) soft goal inside 2mins. Game over . We had nothing to offer after that.

Momentum is everything . We had momentum in the game yesterday and barring that injury to their defender, we would have gone into get that 2nd all important goal. That injury time saved Plymouth in my view.
When looking at the top 3 teams right now . It’s SWFC that gave that momentum. They’ve made up 10 points on us. I think they’ll go up as champs. We just have to hope we can pick up our firm and Plymouth continue to draw games. It’s their home form that’s keeping them top.

This is always my fear of the play offs and reminds me of the 04/05 season.
We missed out on second by 2 points and ended up paired with West Ham who finished 12 points behind us in 6th.
That was a tough one to take.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

Trouble is if Plymouth continue to draw away and win at home they will win 98 points. Yes they will surely drop some more points at home, but they will also bag a few wins away. I see them potentially losing at Sheff Weds, dropping points at home against Derby, and perhaps struggling at Barnsley, but otherwise I think we have to assume they will win most of the rest of their games. The expected drop off is not happening and the influx of players over the transfer windows mean it will not happen. With Wednesday firing on all cylinders I think we need 95 points go up. Extraordinary but there it is. Play offs most likely outcome.

Bit harsh to blame Craig Forrest for conceding a soft goal in the 2005 play-offs. He was bound to be rusty considering he'd retired a few years before that.

Yes, obviously. Come on mate.

I think we would smash someone like Wycombe over 2 legs

Derby and Bolton are the two I would fear.

Truly impaired.

Plus, the really early goal conceded vs West Ham at home in 04/05 was during the regular league fixture, not the playoff. If memory serves, wasn't it 2 fairly late Zamora goals that did for us in the playoff?
