Terrifying isn't it? I know some seemingly intelligent people who have become the next generation of flat earthers. Thye're anti-15 minute cities, cash is being reduced so the govt can track every transaction etc etc etc. They're seeing ghosts under the bed at every twist and turn.

The Le Tissier effect. What a rabbit hole he’s gone down the last few years.

You can add the talentless chancer Russel Brand who was always susceptible to believing whatever was told to him For the avoidance of being thought to ridicule righties I would suggest others read Jason Stanley’s book, How Fascism Works. It covers how those with strong feelings of social inadequacy and consequently sexual inadequacy gravitate towards something that offers them not only an explanation but a solution. The UK does not have a 'gun culture' so they stick to tuning into fruitcake websites and convincing themselves they are an elite. Part of a small group who understand 'the truth', which is why they stand outside of social contact. Not through inadequacy, but actually through ability, the chosen ones. Their built-up resentment (and/or stupidity) stops them from rationally thinking through this stuff. It is the power it gives them. And even when it is obvious (wee Jock McCranky, Neil Oliver, and his claim King Arthur will return to save the country) they are not prepared to have their new found wisdom trashed Which brings up the question as to whether righties are born that way or has social conditions drove them into that world ?

Yep. I believe the correct term for them is ‘feckwits’. Anti-vax, climate change denial, the Great Reset, cultural Marxism, etc., and dare I say it often Brexit. The Venn diagram is often close to a circle. There are some people who are thoroughly gullible and, er, stupid. Apologies for sneering, but I don’t see how they can be anything else but stupid. Exploited victims maybe, if you want to be generous.

Absolutely zero understanding of science, but "just knows" these conspiracies to be true. Fairies at the bottom of the garden - seriously, she claims to have seen them. I would never be able to, because my mind is closed. There is no hope with these people, reasoned debate just is not possible.

Brand is supposedly of the left but I never found him intellectually coherent or convincing, and thought him a fraud, even when he was being lauded by the Guardian.

I actually think the best response would have been a full throated chorus of "Who let the dogs out? Who? Who? Who-who?" Repeated over and over until he left. Surrealism is always the best way to avoid engaging with people like this.
The loons are at it again then, I see on 10:51 - Apr 23 with 1227 views | DJR | This, from today's Mail, suggests the loons are not confined to the fringes. "The felling of Dominic Raab by a lynch mob composed of malicious mandarins and mendacious sections of the media is more than just one high-powered politician losing his job. It is chilling proof that we are living in an atmosphere of hysteria directed against the Conservatives such as has not been seen since the left’s gleeful, grave-dancing reaction to Margaret Thatcher’s death in 2013. After a vicious and sustained pincer movement by left-wing civil servants and hostile journalists to undermine him as an elected MP and cabinet minister, he was left with no choice but to resign. What happened was that in a ministry full of Labour-supporting civil servants, the former justice secretary found himself targeted, isolated and undermined, with even his private secretaries replaced on the orders of senior bureaucrats." How much more conspiracy theorist can you get than this article and especially its patently untrue reference to "a ministry full of Labour supporting civil servants"? [Post edited 23 Apr 2023 10:53]

Jeez. The ignorance and self-delusion really are total. But that goes for the Mail audience even more so difficult to know how consciously or deliberately the Mail is pushing this dishonest narrative.
