How good do we think our squad is? 15:17 - Jun 7 with 3688 viewsthe_toff

Walton

Woolfenden
Davis
Morsy
Burns
Broadhead

Is there anyone else in our squad you would hang your hat on in the Championship? Or any of those you wouldn't? I think we've got a lot of decent 'fillers' like Luongo, Ball, Ladapo and Burgess but think we need another 3 or 4 of the quality of that lot above to take us to the next level.

Must be a good 6 or 7 to be shown the door to make way? Evans and Camara can both go. Jackson and Ahadme too. I can't understand why we kept Aluko. Pigott and Harper can leave.

I'd like to think the improvement Cam Burgess has made under McKenna will get recognised at some point.

Bloke is a monster in the air and very tidy on the ground now with some wonderful cross field pings. Derby fans were raving about him in the away game.
At one point the 750k we spent on him looked a bust (especially after Barrow away) now it looks like super business.

Only weakness of his is lack of super pace, but even then I can only remember him getting turned a few times last season and no more than Woolfy did.

I hope he is given the opportunity to at least show he is more than 'filler' next season.

Each to their own but I don't agree. I do agree aerially he's a monster, but on the floor and 1-on-1 I don't think he's particularly good. I think his frailties weren't given much opportunity to be exposed when he's been sat on the half way line in a side with 75% possession against opponents who often showed little intent to get out of their half. Against tougher opposition and when we're a little more up against it I personally don't have a huge amount of confidence that he's much more that a decent, but basic defender.

I hope he proves me wrong though. I would gladly eat my words.

Yeah hopefully.

Because you’ve made a hypothetical situation up and ran with it.

Hopefully he just continues to do what he actually did last season.

At least as good as Luton's last season.

Yeah, 3-4 quality players and we could really push on imo. Striker is an obvious ask. A centre mid (2 if you include Luongo). Another quality No 10 to compete with Chappers and Broady (I don't rate our others for the Championship). And a quality CB too.

We won't be bad if we don't get those, but better quality in those positions could turn us into a really decent side.

Keeping hold of KM is obviously important too.

You "fillers" are perfectly good enough as squad players. I'd add Leigh and Donacien in to that as well. Evans if fit adds something (but not pace!). I'm not sold on Harness though - I don't see him in the championship at all (but that may be unfair).

The table doesn't lie.
8th place is damn good for out first season back in the Championship.

I can't fathom why Birmingham and Blackburn get the 2 auto spots though?

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Whisper it quietly, as unrealistic expectations are the undoing of a lot of fans, but I think we can aim for more than mid-table mediocrity.

The off season is my favourite time of year, stangely. Even as a kid I'd love the build up to the season, wondering whether this year we were going to get it right. Even the friendlies don't always give you a good gauge of how you'll get on.

I have to admit that I go down the rabbit hole of any rumour.
I google the player first and read sports articles about him.
Then I search YouTube for vids.
I check TWTD for Frimleys dis and then reluctantly accept it's just a rumour.

I think Edwards could be a sleeper, feel he could be more effective at this level and has experience.

Freddie has goals at this level too and is i think a solid if unspectacular striker in a Champ side but definitely we need a striker.

That plus a defender and maybe a RB instead of Janoi if we're being hyper critical

Also there's always some youngster who plays 45 minutes for the first-team against Lowestoft or something, and all of a sudden you think here we go, our next wonderkid.

Then two months later he's either off to Arsenal, on loan at Bromley and not even getting on the bench, or beset with rumours his attitude isn't right and you never hear about him again.

Yeah I actually thought we did okay in the pre season friendlies under Hurst which says it all!

I’d like to see the likes of Burgess succeed at this level, but I think we have to brace ourselves for some of last seasons heroes either being shipped out or not cutting it. It’ll be hard to take but I think the owners will be fairly ruthless (in recruitment)now we are one step away from the Prem.

Neither centre backs are good enough in my humble opinion . Time will tell and I’d be the first to be very happy if they were. Just not convinced - yet.

At this point in time we are better than Sunderland we’re at this point in time last year by a distance.

Without additions top half, with additions/a change or two better - play offs? Maybe. Why not?

I see ‘names’ we’ve not played for a few years and that’s good but are the Championship teams scary? No. Not in the least.

Wolfie is class and will prove you wrong again, not sure why you are constantly writing off our record breaking defence. I even saw some Barnsley fans saying he’s the best defender they’d seen all season.

The only real measure we have to-date is the two games against Burnley and I don't think we did too badly then.

It’s not a negative post. I think our squad is strong, I’m just asking what the general consensus is. I think those 8 players I mentioned are potentially upper Championship ready under McKenna, although who really knows until we get started.

Just can’t help but feel 3 or 4 ‘top’ additions of that quality would really leave us with no weaker links in terms of a starting XI. It’s very much a squad game and the ‘fillers’ are perfectly able squad players who can come off the bench or come in and help. We’re never going to have a squad of 23 top championship players. I just think we’re a forward, central midfield and central defender short. Even last season I do think there was a drop off when a number of those were more involved. The last couple of months of the season we were exceptional and largely kept the same unchanged side.

A few big additions through the spine would really kick us on a level I think.

If you follow Phil’s ‘he’s not on our radar’ thread it could save you a lot of time. The only problem is it could take him a few years to get through every player we’re not going to sign.

I think almost every player in our squad will be individually capable of giving a good account of themselves in games in the Championship. Yes, we're mainly comprised of League One players, discarded Championship players and Premier League academy drop-outs, but so are most clubs at this level.

I doubt that Marcus Harness or Kayden Jackson are going to rip their way through the Championship, but I'd trust them to be good competitors and to do a job if they're called upon to do so.

For me, the difference between good, average and bad Championship sides is not whether they have 25 players they can "hang their hat on", it's the other end of the scale, it's a question of what they have that seriously hurts an opponent - either individually or collectively.

Can back that up with stats if you like...

We averaged 2.13 Points Per Game last season - these are our 7 players who outperformed that based on their individual PPG (only including players who were on the pitch for 1,000+ minutes):

1) Luongo 2.73
2) Broadhead 2.42
3) Clarke 2.35
4) Hirst 2.29
5) Burgess 2.27
6) Woolfenden 2.15
7) Morsy 2.14

Based on that, I think Luongo and Burgess have earned the right to be considered more than "fillers"...

Not being hyper critical, if the right player became available in any position I’m sure we would look to improve the squad.

Could add that if our two young midfielders really impress KMc in pre-season we might move on another midfielder.

Really no idea who we will sign, nor who we will look to move in. In KMc we trust.
