..........................Walton

Clarke............Wolfie...........????.............Davis

....................Morsy...........?????

????/Burns...............Chaplin.................Broadhead

.............................???????

Only reason for the ????? next to Morsy is I really don't know who his nailed on partner will be.

But think we'll be looking for another CB, obviously a striker or two and some serious competition for Burns.

I reckon Chaplin will be a nailed on starter.

Really not sure if Burns will be… maybe to begin with.

Taylor with Morsy I imagine.

Clarke won’t be for the Sunderland game

....and now Taylor are probably the only players that I think are guaranteed starters.

Morsy, Wolf and Clarke are probably safe for this season, purely because we won't have the time or money to replace them yet.

The other 3 places are entirely up for grabs and obviously areas where we need signings.

Just my opinion of course.

Looks about right. Although we've not spent £1.5m on Taylor for him not to start IMO.

I wouldn't say anyone is nailed on unless they play well, such is the depth in the squad. But in terms of right now Taylor is in for me, arguably more so than Clarke. He had it easy last season, relatively speaking. I think he'll face much bigger tests this season and it'll be interesting to see how he comes through them.

I might have misunderstood this from KOA's assessment of McKenna's post Felixstowe interview, but isn't it implied Taylor destined to be Burns competition/replacement? Which would then make Luongo the nailed on partner to Morsy (which I'd be very happy with).

Completely agree on need for one maybe two strikers, very anxious about lack of progress (I am an anxious chap in general admittedly). I thought/hoped Hirst would be announced not long after season end, but that seems to have gone stone cold now.

This won't make me popular on here at all, but you know, respectful difference of opinion should be ok anywhere (even the internet if you can imagine such a world). For me, Wolfie is not a championship defender. I must be seeing something else given the love he gets, but to me he seemed (bang) average with always at least one clanger per game in him - misjudged ball in the air that he's missed, under/over hit pass, completely missing a tackle.

I get there will be rose-tinted glasses for a local boy, but he just ain't my cuppa char and would prefer two new top notch CB's in the team for the coming season. Sorry!

Are you saying Championship defenders don't do at least one of those things a game?

Get what you are saying about Wolfie having a mistake in him, but I think he largely irradiated that in the 2nd half of last season. Not to forget that Central defenders normally reach their peak much later that others, given how technical a position it is in reality.

Wolfie is only 24, probably won't peak for 3-4 years. Plenty of time for him.

How did we manage a club record run of clean sheets if Wolfie was dropping a clanger every game.

I thought he indicated he wants him to play down the middle of midfield:

“He’s versatile in midfield. He’s done different roles but for us primarily, to play as one of the main central midfielders, you have to be able to receive in deep positions and we see him as someone we want to see get beyond the ball, make forward runs, get in the box and try add some goals from that area.”

McKenna: Taylor is a Good Profile For Us in All Aspects 1st Jul 2023 16:27
Boss Kieran McKenna says new signing Jack Taylor is a good profile for the Blues from a number of angles, the midfielder having signed from Peterborough earlier in the week, while the Town manager has outlined the reasons for keeping Massimo Luongo and Sone Aluko at Portman Road. 5

There's no way Taylor is going to be playing in Burns' role. I do think we'll strengthen there and give Wesley some competition, but Taylor is very much a central midfielder. He'll partner Morsy I would think.

Can't agree on Woolfenden, I thought he came through last season pretty much faultless. Yes there were games where he had very little to do defensively, but he's decent on the ball and started a lot of moves by stepping out of the back line. Not sure I've seen too many (realistic) options that would represent a step up on him.

....I don't think he should be a guaranteed starter.

I also said that he probably will be, because we won't have anyone better this season.

A lot of our fans seem really reluctant for us to actually try and improve the team.

The favourites to be relegated from the Championship next season are Plymouth, and they finished above us.

We need to strengthen, we can't rest on our laurels.

Your OP proposes Taylor isn't nailed on 6 days after signing him for £1.5m, so I'm not sure why it's such a stretch to suggest Clarke isn't either.

Morsy and Clarke will be nailed on starters this season, surely. And unless we're going to sign at least 2 CBs in the next couple of weeks, the Wolf is also nailed on. He is key to how KMac wants us to play. If a more experienced quality CB comes in alongside him, so much the better, and I think we can all see that a new CB is on the cards.

For me:

Nailed on (6): Walton, Woolf, Davis, Morsy, Broadhead, Chappers

Highly likely (2): Taylor, Burns.

I think it's all to play for with the striker, RB and left sided CB positions. Ladapo, Clarke and Burgess / Edmundson the pick right now, but wouldn't rule out that changing.

If you are talking nailed on:

Walton
Clarke (still some work/consistency)
Davis
Morsy
Broadhead

Chaplin is probably nailed on to start the season and I hope he picks up where he left off. But he'll have work to do because his role is critical and will take a significant step up to perform it over above the other roles (that and CF but we don't have a nailed on CF)
