I've been a few times, it is indeed stunning - the sea is incredible and there's mountain and island backdrops everywhere you look. It's not as cheap as it used to be (drink prices lower than most but food not so much) but it's a very lovely place. Where abouts are you going? There's some amazing national parks that are worth a visit depending on which bit of Croatia you're in.

Looking at Split, just deciding and getting ideas, glad you sound like you loved it, I've heard really good things.

Yes it’s very pretty, some amazing views, some terrific history too. On the minus side a friend of ours consistently experienced the kind of racism you’d have had here in the 60s/70s

Yeah, that's my only slight concern, my wife is mixed race and heard similar stories.

Yes, it's wonderful but much of it gets more and more crowded by the year — Dubrovnik is almost impossible nowadays (to my taste anyway).

If you're using Split as a base (great city), islands like Hvar and Korcula will be rammed until September but I can really recommend Vis, slightly further out, which ought to be a bit quieter and has all the good bits including beaches/seafood/history. Definitely a great holiday whenever/wherever you go tho.

I went there on Inter Rail in 1981 when Croatia was still part of Yugoslavia.

As well as the coast and places like Split and Dubrovnik (now rebuilt), the capital Zagreb was pretty, and the Plitvice Lakes were stunning, even though many miles from the nearest railway station.

An abiding memory of the area (just like the Netherlands) was just how tall the people were, and I was just over 6 ft at the time.

EDIT: this suggests there is some truth in this.

Yep and will definitely go back, lovely weather, food, and scenery and tonnes of history. Small country too so easy to nip over the border to Bosnia/Montenegro, although perhaps less so if you are in Split.

Their recovery from Communism and the Yugoslav wars is quite amazing, whereas over in Bosnia there are still land mines and war torn buildings.

From Split you can get pretty much everywhere. The islands are lovely but get crowded and are probably more touristy than the mainland I would say. Brac is the nearest island to Split, you can get there and back in a day and it's got one of the most famous beaches in Europe there, Zlatni Rat: https://www.bolcroatia.com/bol-beaches/zlatni-rat-beach/

Krka National Park is only about an hour from Split and is absolutely stunning, you can swim at the base of the waterfalls there.

There's a gorgeous little town called Omis about 20km down the coast from Split which is well worth a visit, and lots of small towns in between where you can get dirt cheap but very nice Airbnbs a stone's throw from the sea.

Wherever you go it will be lovely though, it's 90% stunning coastline and islands.

Oh, and whilst in Split you should definitely visit Froggyland. An attraction not to be missed.

Looks incredible. There's some great bargains to be had on Airbnb in Croatia. A place like that right by the water for under £100 a night is cracking value.

No swimming allowed when we were there last year. Stunning waterfalls though.

It's a very interesting place. Avoid Dubrovnik if there's a cruise liner in. Nearby Cavtat is lovely - we stayed there.
Mostar (where the famous bridge they dive from into the river) is an interesting place. When we visited in about 2006, we walked down one street where it appeared the bars on one side of the street were full of blokes from one side of the 1990s war , and those on the other side were from the other. You could cut the atmosphere with a knife, and I felt that if anybody said the wrong thing, or looked at somebody the wrong way, it would kick off.

Montenegro is beautiful.

We're going back in late September, but visiting the north of the country.

Really? That must be a recent thing with the no swimming, only a few years ago that I was there and you could swim. Still lovely though regardless.

No. Does that help?

I’d like to go though - looks amazing. We nearly incorporated it on our make-it-up-as-you-go-along European tour about 10 years ago, but decided to spend more time inItaly and amble around the Alpine countries for a bit. Not that that helps you either.

I also went to the area when it was all Yugoslavia. Stayed in Budva, which is now in Montenegro. The trip up to Dubrovnic around the Bay of Kotor was stunning. So were the public toilets. An old lady sitting outside handing out two sheets of toilet paper and demanding dinars.

The bridge at Mostar was also destroyed during the conflict so the one you see now is a re-build.

Just back from a week in Rovinj which is in Istria region on northern part of the coast. It’s a stunning place, this was our third time going there as we love it so much. Simply the most beautiful old town and harbour, with lots of great bars and restaurants. Short stroll along a lovely coastal path to a national park with forests and beaches and beautiful bays. Nowhere I’ve been in Croatia has been better and it’s only a two hour flight from Stansted to Pula. Went to Split last year which is ok for a day or two but took ferry to Milna on Brac island for a week which was much nicer. Dubrovnik is stunning but again it’s a city break not a longer holiday destination. June and September are best times to go if you can.
