I’m not one for hyperbole, but…. 23:53 - Oct 3 with 3639 viewsBloots

….I genuinely can’t remember a half of football where we have played better than the first 45 tonight.

We’ve scored more many times and obviously created more chances, but not with such style and not against a team that was in form and expected to be a really tough test.

I’m generally a miserable, pessimistic sod (I refused to accept we’d get promoted until we scored our 5th against Exeter last season) but even I felt that I had to stand and applaud them off the pitch at half time.

A remarkable display.

Not that it matters but the stats from tonight are depressing. It looks like Hull actually gave us a game.

Best half of football this season.

They hadn't lost in 8 games but couldn't lay a glove on us tonight

There's clearly some good players in that side but they look very vulnerable defensively

You have to say on the second half performance, they need to be starting Twine

The stats are weird, looks like a close game whereas it was nothing of the sort. Apparently they had the same number of shots on target as us, but I can't remember Hladky being truly tested once.

Hull got some shots in when it was already 3-0, but I find it very hard to believe it was 50-50 possession, it felt more like 65-35

What the stats can't explain is that we looked completely in control when they had the ball because we chose where to let them have the ball.

I really liked the game plan and, on TV at least, it looked clear.

Everyone knew when and where to press, force the ball back from the Hull midfield , drive it to their leftback and leave him no short outs, force him long on his wrong foot.

Turnover ball.

There was another bit in the second half where Harness was our furthest forward player, but he knew his job wasn't to press their keeper. Cue Hirst to sprint past and do that job, and again, we turned it over after a long punt through the middle.

Possession is one measure, but effective possession is entirely another.

And as a bonus feature, when Morsy gets on the ball and drives us up the pitch, beating a man or two, it rarely delivers an outcome on the pitch, but the roar from the PR faithful just raises everything an extra 10%. Lovely to see.

Yeah I was saying to Lady Dollers at 3-0 "Why are they just playing it around the back? They need goals, they won't score them from there." Then it occurred to me - "Maybe they're just trying to stop us scoring more goals!"

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Great minds Bloots......

We were pretty much unplayable tonight weren't we? by Dubtractor 3 Oct 2023 23:00
Every element of our play was as close to perfect as you'll get at this level, we barely let them into our penalty area all night, created chances throughout the game, scored 3 well worked goals, no bookings despite being aggressive off the ball. The first half in particular was as good as I've seen for a fair while, considering the standard of opponent.

Magnificent!

Helpfully I took a screenshot of the stats just before the 3rd goal, before we wound down:
Shots 10 - 3, on target 4 - 1, possession 53 - 47. After that we controlled it and they had more ball and attempts but nothing really threatening.

Yep, they had some hopeful shots from 25 yards out, none of which tested Hladky.

Goes back to what Sir Alex always said, in football only one stat matters; goals for, versus goals against.

A lot of their possession came from the last 15-20 minutes, but the game was over then. We let them have the ball but we still had full control. It was pointless us chasing everything then, keep some energy for the Sat game.

This plus the fact that the large amount of changes we made in a small space of time pretty much killed the momentum.

As you say though, fresh legs for Saturday was vital at that point with the game already won.

I thought the shots they had towards the end of the game were a bit more than hopeful, they were decent strikes that did test Hladky. But he was well up to the test, the defence certainly have to get some credit for our clean sheet but take nothing away from the keeper, he was excellent and didn't just contribute a great deal to the clean sheet because his part in playing the ball out from the back is a major factor in our success this season too.

Bloody hell, what have you done with the faux-miserable Bloots??

We were really good, even letting Hull have 10 minutes of much greater possession but staying in control.

Arsenal at home in 2000 comes to mind as a comparitor, we were ridiculously good that day: Jamma did the funky turn and Naylor should have buried a header for an end-to-end multiple pass goal on a par with how we're playing at the moment.

You can use just one word to describe everything about the current set up……..comfortable.

Every player is comfortable on, and off, the ball; comfortable with the style of play; fans are also comfortable about everything, there was a feeling yesterday that if needed we could have stepped up another gear.

It is a good feeling, long may it continue.

An outsider's view of us after the first half; comment posted on the matchday thread on the Hull City forum at half-time:

"They’re the rip-roaring, goal-scoring upstarts of the division who aren’t scared of anyone and like to attack any opponent no matter who they are and press aggressively. Even Leicester and Leeds with all their quality didn’t put us to the sword quite like this."

Knew the first part of that - happy to hear the second part!

Definitely did our homework on them and exposed their limitations. They've got serious pace and running power in Philogene and Delap, which meant we seemed to set a much deeper defensive line for the most part and tasked them with getting through it or playing in front of it. Thought we showed really good discipline defensively which given Edmundson was starting his first league game since February was highly impressive.

Burns was set up narrower than he typically does, forcing their right footed left back on the outside to his weaker foot. Out of possession Burns' positioning is unreal, he limited so many out balls into midfield last night.

Tactically spot on but that's only half the battle, the execution of it was so impressive. I make that our best performance of the season against a side who I think will do pretty well.

Thought their fans deserve some credit too, long old poke on a Tuesday night and when you're 3-0 down to keep encouraging the side like they did fair play. Got chatting to a couple on my walk away from the ground and they were good lads and really impressed with Town.
