Foie Gras 06:32 - Oct 27 with 2484 views | gtsb1966 | Just seen in the Times this morning an article about it and how 9 out of 10 people want it banned . What puzzles me though is how 10% of the people surveyed can think it's OK. It's an horrific way to produce food. Cruelty beyond belief. Wasn't surprised to read though that when the proposal for a ban was put to parliament last year the likes of Jacob Rees Mogg (a lot of tories wanted a ban ) was against it. Having just wrote that last bit I now realise what type of people those 10% are.

How do you ethically force feed an animal so that it's liver expands up to ten times it's regular size?

I’m having a good go. Plenty of Stella and Staropramen, through in a few bottles of wine or even better a traditional real ale pub with lots of guest beers. I’m happy, so it must be ethical. But I doubt anyone would want my liver when it’s done. It won’t be ending up on the shelves of Fortnum & Mason. (Interesting Q, I’m not sure how that could be done either).

It's the ultra-fattiness they're after, so presumably the ethical stuff is just ordinary goose pate blended with fats to give the right consistency. Won't be exactly the same, but close enough. A bit like modern veal, which is usually just yong calf meat, without the abominable crating process. This article suggests it's something slightly different - an ultra-free-range variant on goose-liver pate: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jan/18/the-farmer-who-makes-ethical-foie-

That's fairly straightforward. What goes into the bird influences the end product. So you tightly control feeding for only those flavours/textures/colours that you want. Then shovel as much as possible in to maximise the harvest.

The same way half the kids in the world are obese put them in a room with all their favourite fatty foods and watch them eat an endless supply! Geese are naturally greedy

I thought they stuffed it so much because that somehow produces a better flavour, rather than just producing more of it?

Foie Gras on 15:08 - Oct 27 with 1890 views | _clive_baker_ | Aside from my moral objections to it I think it should be banned on taste grounds anyway. I had it once in France many years ago, as much out of curiosity as it was served up as an appetiser at a wedding. Tasted like ass, really sickly and fatty like eating a block of butter. Absolutely rank and genuinely made me feel a little sick for a few hours.

Please don't drink that slop. Life is too short (especially when shortened by beer) to drink bad beer. Stella and Staro is brewed in massive vats somewhere in England. Its a pale travesty of the real beers from which their names are taken. Get some decent stuff in. Budvar and Urquell are still only from CZR if you like the Staro style.
Foie Gras on 15:38 - Oct 27 with 1787 views | Herbivore | Speaking as a vegan, geese are arseholes and would 100% do the same to us if given half a chance. That said, we should take the moral high ground and not lower ourselves to that kind of behaviour. It's pretty grim but then lots of factory farming practices aren't all that much better.
