I am sure there was a time when it was exciting watching England.

Just dull and has been for a while.

They were very good in 1966.
With some genuine world class players.

Freshen the squad
Get rid of dead wood
But FA and Southgate will prob sleepwalk
to defeat and waste another tournament..

the players are available.

World Cup semis, England was very unlucky and played very well - perhaps not cool to recognise that.

God, imagine sleepwalking to another semi at least.

Get Big Sam in now.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

IMO they had 4 world class players, one who did not play in the final. Banks, B Charlton, Moore and Greaves.

I don't think there was ever a point where it was exciting to watch England play a dead rubber qualifying match against the 171st best national team.

Not sure watching a much changed England side against Malta, in a group we’ve already qualified from, had many of the hallmarks of a likely classic.

Didn't see last night's game but gotta disagree about England being dull. Did you not see us spank Italy a couple of months back? Looked like ITFC in full flow at times.

There is an argument for Nobby as well but I don't think him and the rest were quite at that level. A world class FB would be at Cafu or Roberto Carlos level and a world class DM would be at Beckenbauers.

You have to go back a very long time to find competitive World Cup qualifying games. In 1974 there was a very good game against Poland. People didn’t like that either.

Greece in 2001. Italy in 1998.

I doubt I've got the stamina to make it past a group stage, these days...

I could only dream of a Final Messi happy ending- not sure I could put in a performance with a billion people watching.

Who's world class now? IMO Kane without a doubt. Bellingham on the verge of if not already. Saka has the potential to be but not at the moment.

World class in comparison to whom? Quite a lot of them could pretty plausibly claim to be top three in the world in their position, not least because a fair few of them consistently start for the best club side in the world (Kyle Walker, John Stones, Phil Foden).

Er! Beckenbauer was never a midfielder. He was a sweeper with license to move forward.

Not sure why Bellingham isn’t there already. He’s a permanent fixture in the Real team and current top scorer in La Liga with 10 in 11. He’s outrageously good, and I think if you picked a 23 man World Cup squad from all the nations then Kane & Bellingham are both in it. I can’t think of many better in the world than them right now.

Beyond those we’ve got some very good players in Rice, Foden, Stones, Walker, Saka. They would get in most squads. We’re ranked 4th in the world for a reason and I don’t think too many could argue with it given our last 2 world cups were a semi and a quarters (losing narrowly to France). Had we beaten France I think we would’ve also beaten Morocco in a semi. Most recent Euros was a final which we lost on penalties to Italy. Don’t really get the hate, we’re as good now as we’ve been in my lifetime.

I think the issue is that we've made qualifying look really easy in recent years - so there is almost no jeopardy to the games at all. We tend not to even need to bust a gut in the process either, so the games are at a low tempo.

Our tournament football is much better to watch though.

As a result I rarely watch qualifiers, but find myself glued to the tournaments.

There's no jeopardy in qualifyiing games any more. There are so many places available in the Euros and World Cup that all the bigger nations are bound to qualify except where there is a monumental cock up.

When I was a lad England always seemed to be locked into a struggle with Italy from which only one side could emerge as a qualifier. And England always seemed to be thwarted by sub-par performances against Luxembourg.

Anyway, not only was there something rare and important riding on the qualification games, but there was a genuine risk of failure. That made them tense and exciting. Now it's just a parade of beating weak opposition and doing enough against the other decent team to finish in the top two.

It's too easy.

Don't boil a kettle on a boat.

Quite brilliant at times in the World Cup semi-final and a Kane missed pen was England's undoing. Up in the Euro finals and narrowly missing out. Yeah, but apart from that - rubbish.

Football is not your thing I see.
