4 very good teams now competing for 2 places 16:20 - Dec 3 with 5900 views | orfordbuoy | Each time we don't win our rivals will benefit. Reading the forums, Leicester see us as much as an ally as a rival. Leeds and Soton are not so friendly.
4 very good teams now competing for 2 places on 16:27 - Dec 3 with 5818 views | Parky | Whilst it’s easy [and enjoyable at the moment] to keep checking the table and results of those around us, it’s important to remember that we still have 27 games to play and 81 points still up for grabs. It’s more than likely there’s going to be a lot of twists and turns, any team can beat anybody in this division and put on a run, just as teams are capable to go on losing runs. FWIW, not necessarily aimed at you, few people were going mad in the pub yesterday when Leicester scored their winner. Just need to enjoy the ride!

I know the club likes to downplay the reality, but we are reaching the midway stage and we are where we are based on merit. I wonder if Sheff Wed and Rotherham fans are saying we have 27 matches to play so we won't read too much into our league position as anything can happen? I am not necessarily disagreeing with post - and yes, let's enjoy the ride.

Really? I thought staying a draw was a good result rather than a Leics win. Thing is, we don't really know if another game is/was a good result for us until May. Thinking back to that Barnsley/Sheff Weds game last season. A lot of people were rooting for Owls to win that. If they had, we'd have finished third!

4 very good teams now competing for 2 places on 16:46 - Dec 3 with 5689 views | Illinoisblue | It does seem like the top 4 are out by themselves. Hopefully WBA’s money problems will disrupt them as they look good. After that there’s about 14 teams who probably think they can reach the playoffs (yes, including scum in that). Plenty more twists and turns to come. I think top two might just be a stretch for us and playoffs more likely. Let the ride continue.

Going to be interesting to see how the top six plans out on 16:57 - Dec 3 with 5609 views | unstableblue | I do think Leicester, Leeds, Ipswich, and Saints will continue to battle for the top two for some time. And for me Saints are dark horses for the title. We'll know more about our credentials on Boxing Day night after we play the current leaders. But McKenna will just keep us focussed on the next game, and no further. And Boro will be some test, despite their injuries/suspensions. In terms of the top 6 is it now settling? I think this will be 5 of them: Leicester Ipswich Leeds Saints West Brom But who'll take the 6th?: Hull, Sunderland, Watford, Boro should be in my mind the main candidates.. but Sunderland are blipping. Can't see Blackburn staying the course. [Love the board name Orfordbuoy.. I had a wild walk on shingle street the other day and the Orford Haven Buoy was being battered and mouth of the Ore was moody!]

I’m not sure the anyone-can-beat-anyone cliche is very applicable this season . We’ve lost two games. Against Leeds and WBA Leicester have lost three. Against Hull, Leeds and Middlesbrough. Sure, teams lose games, but the top sides are a long way from the teams in the bottom half. This season looks like it could be like the Premier League often is, with the top sides utterly dominant and the top places decided by the games between them and whichever side has the fewest blips.

True. If you watched the dross on display in the lunchtime game today, you could see the utter lack of quality from the lower mid table sides. Genuine observation as well as a dig!

I get what you’re saying, but we’re not even halfway through the season yet. Just because it’s not happened yet, doesn’t mean it isn’t going to happen. Every team can beat anybody. You might be right, and I hope you are to an extent, but there’s a long long way to go. Just as we might win 3 games in a row, there’s every chance we could go and lose 3 in a row. Like I said earlier, my main reasoning to comment was a number of people losing their shît in the pub yesterday because Leicester had won. [Post edited 3 Dec 2023 18:11]

Yes, long may it continue! For me - i think we don't even need to think or consider Leicester. We just need to stay ahead of Leeds(and to some extent Southampton who are on a great run, but i just don't fancy Russel Martin to see it through..) which is going to be tricky unless they lose the £30m striker for an extended period of time. It's going to be interesting to see what we do in January for sure.

Busy Xmas period and then the Jan transfer window seem like they’re going to be massive for us and of course the other contenders. Ideally Leeds and Leicester maybe lose a couple of their better players, we strengthen and then who knows….

I don't see there is much chance we'll lose three games in a row. Barring something extraordinary like an illness sweeping the squad. Every defeat has been followed by at least a couple of wins. We only had two draws on the trot, IMO, because we were significantly denuded on the right side (both Burns and Williams out).

And isn't it just absolutely amazing that we are in that mix, 2nd place and only a quite catastrophic run would risk us falling out of the top 6?
4 very good teams now competing for 2 places on 20:14 - Dec 3 with 4408 views | gosblue | Did anyone notice that the top 4 all won, while the rest of the top 10 all dropped points. Any of the top 4 could finish in the top 2 and we’ve seen before what a good run can do from a team from lower down. I still fancy us to get automatic promotion but I wouldn’t put my house on it. The January transfer window will once again be the Gamechanger. (See what I did there?)
4 very good teams now competing for 2 places on 20:19 - Dec 3 with 4366 views | Kieran_Knows | The one thing I think about us is, we don’t seem the type of team/group say over a 5 game period where we’d win 1, draw 1 and lose 3. We seem to get over defeats really well and pick up our form straight away. Still though, as mentioned by others, a hell of a lot of games to go. Just hope we can keep within that top 4 pack come January, and we go about our business early again like we did this January. These are the days.

But you can also balance that against us having dropped points against: Huddersfield, Birmingham and Rotherham. Leicester dropping points against: Sheffield Wednesday. Each draw to a lower side can be nearly as harmful as a defeat. There is a gap but none of the teams in the league is a pushover.

I forgot to mention that 45 points was the safety cut off in the championship last season. Target no.1 achieved. 2 points per game was enough for promotion to the prem. we are ahead of the curve on that one atm. Long May it continue. COYB

Wednesday could hurt Leicester in the end. Birmingham, Wednesday and Rotherham could hurt Leeds in the end. Norwich, Sunderland and Rotherham could hurt Southampton in the end. Interestingly, Rotherham and Wednesday are a common factor in there for several teams. We got 4 points from those two matches (both away).

4 very good teams now competing for 2 places on 12:50 - Dec 4 with 3366 views | ElephantintheRoom | If you think Southampton are competing for 2nd place they have to close an 8 point gap and dramatically improve their goal difference. Two big asks that require a major collapse in form from those above them. By that yardstick Plymouth and Coventry are competing for promotion. I haven’t looked at the fixtures but Town haven’t played Leicester home or away, Leeds away, Norwich…. In other words the table always lies until it doesn’t. I

Re Leicester? Why? They are 1, yes 'one' point ahead of us. All this crap regarding letting Leicester go not worrying about them doesn't make sense to me. I think Leeds are a better team than Leicester. Leeds could quite easily be ahead of us and Leicester by the end of Jan. Not saying that will happen but it could. Personally I think more chance Ipswich will finish ahead of Leicester than Leeds. I've been much more more impressed by Leeds than I have been Leicester. And then we've got Southampton to throw into the mix. We don't need to be writing off one promotion slot already. If Leicester were 10 pts ahead of us i'd get it. But they're not. People need to remember all four teams are going to drop points between now and the end of the season. A draw or defeat isn't going to hurt us, we just need to make sure we don't have a run of them. And in McKenna's whole tenure we've never lost two games in a row.
