Probably not been a real risk for any of our managers since Burley. One of the prices of success I guess, and whilst it is annoying, I'd far rather this than mediocrity!

Who was the last manager we had linked with other jobs whilst here? on 20:14 - May 21 with 2464 views | gainsboroughblue | Probably SBR to be honest. I don't recall Burley being chased by anyone. Even the Scottish job was off limits due to Craig Brown's ten year long tenure. Then again, the managerial merry-go-round was only in it's infancy during the mid to late 90's. Certainly nothing like now, and even less so before that. Bill McGarry moved on to Wolves in the late 60's from here (i.e. not sacked, chose to go).

Sure there was some club interest in Mick at some point too, back when his achievements were appreciated.

Fulham and Palace I think you're thinking of. But obviously he got less interest than Cook must have.

We are used to the speculation just not particularly recently and speculation is all it is. Your point is very interesting. We have always shown faith in our managers (until Evans at least) and that seems to have been appreciated by them too. I am sure McKenna would only leave for something that is clearly better than what he has here. I don't think a quick pay day will be that. I don't think a club with no greater potential than us is it either. Therefore, I haven't yet seen any speculation that particularly concerns me.

Jackie Milburn actually resigned. Cobbold tried to persuade him to stay but Milburn knew management wasn’t for him. McGarry left in the autumn of 68 just after promotion. He felt Wolves offered, as a bigger more prestigious club, more opportunity for success. That aged well. John Lyall - I thought he retired, but that may be because he was given the tin tack. Of that list, Ferguson, Duncan, Keane, Jewell, Hurst, Lambert and Cook fully deserved to be booted out. Burley and Magilton were unlucky in my view, though maybe with GB his time had just run out after those rubbish signings 2001/2. [Post edited 22 May 2024 8:44]

Lyall ‘moved upstairs’ leaving McGiven in charge of team matters, but don’t think he was sacked, was he?

Evans was often criticised for not sacking managers sooner. Keane acknowledged that at any number of other clubs, he would have been sacked for not winning a match until Halloween, while Jewell also could have been removed at least a year before he actually was. Lambert was given a 5 year contract while our promotion challenge was floundering in League One and arguably talked himself out of the job a year later by criticising Evans’s running of the club publicly. I’ve always said though that, with the exception of McCarthy, Evans’s managerial choices represent the longest run of managerial incompetence in the club’s history. It’s genuinely staggering just how badly organised and coached we were over the majority of his ownership. He must have felt people were doing it deliberately after a while.

I didn’t think so. Terrific manager, Lyall. It’s just a shame he didn’t come to USA few years earlier. That ‘family club’ that ‘looks after their own’, ‘east end geezers’ and all that jazz treated him like dirt. He never forgave them and I don’t blame him.
