Never a pen for me, tried to play for it rather than just going for goal which is ridiculous.

Glad I'm not alone in disagreeing with the commentary team who have more or less said it was a blatant pen.

No chance.

Jumped in the air to do an emergency stop. Bonkers.

Looked like he of jumped to change position and shield the ball, going on the angles they just showed, then got the knee in the leg causing him to go over.

Exactly. Anyone who has played decent football can see this. He was not going for the ball, he slowed down and jumped, waiting for contact. He was not impeded, he created the contact rather than going for the ball.

Everyone's got a knee in the leg! No justification for a penalty, Shirley?

Yeah, seeing it back now he gets whacked in the calf and that spins him. He did look like he was playing for it, so that presumably influenced the officials. I’d want a pen if it was us. There was a good chance he’d have been offside though.

Struggling with replays on my sky stream but thought the through ball to Armstrong looked off side.
Can anyone verify?

No pen for me. Silly to throw his leg out for contact. Should have got his shot away instead.

In the Prem that's a pen all day long.

I was wondering if he dived into the defender but on multiple replays the defenders knee caught his calf which took him down.

Really surprised it didn't go to a Ref review at least. TV over here said the offside check was passed if so that's a scandalous decision!!!

Mind you both teams were terrible, why was McTominay taking corners???

He was playing for it.

Jumped in the air, and performed an emergency stop on landing.

Dangled his leg.

Pulled the defender on top of him by grabbing his shirt.

Best ref decision of the year!!

Has that been proven? I thought he looked it but not seen anything to confirm. He tried to initiate the contact with the defender but looked like the defender kneed him in the leg not so sure he was on the way down but strange he didn't make more of an attempt to actually shoot!

I did wonder if a possible offside effected the VAR check or lack of it

Can watch it a million times...whatever side you are on not having a VAR review seems crazy! Let's be honest if that was Hirst we'd be saying penalty. I was wondering was Armstrong trying to get the ball on his favoured foot... or was he playing for the penalty?

It was a pen. There’s nothing in the rules to say you have to get a shot off. He protected the ball with his body and got a knee in the back of the leg. That’s a foul all day long.

At least Steve Clarke took it well and didn’t bring up Argentina…….

Precisely if that's not a penalty because Armstrong put his leg across the defender to protect the ball then at least 4 of Omari's pen I demanded last season, which he didn't get, I now have to admit they weren't penalties. As Omari would often get into the box put himself between the defender and ball to protect the ball and then the defender caught his leg

I'm no Scotland fan and delighted they're out, but that was a penalty all day long. Even if it was proved he was offside, VAR should review that, the fact VAR didn't was a disgrace. Like with the Dutch goal/non goal, the on field officials gave it as offside, but VAR still checked. VAR was introduced to help refs as often their position on the pitch can block a perfect view. VAR should review that and advise the ref to double check at pitchside.
Also proves those people moaning VAR only fails when it involves English officials have been proved wrong.

There is a massive difference between shielding the ball and being at full pelt, then suddenly slamming on the brakes and jumping in the air waiting for contact. He was not impeded. He chose to have a collision rather than continue.

It is puzzling that there was no review (if there wasn't, which is not clear)

They will have looked at it but it didn't go to full VAR review, presumably because it was either offside or after one viewing they decided it wasn't a clear and obvious error. I agree with those saying Armstrong initiates the contact, what he did was very different from fully stepping across the man to shield the ball and then getting taken out, he deliberately positions his body in a completely unnatural way to try and make contact with the defender and go to ground.
