Southgate gone on 11:07 - Jul 16 with 3249 views | itfcjoe | Massive shoes to fill, we've gone so far in the last 8 years and he's been a fine manager Think it had run it's course, but hard to see who comes in as a slam dunk to improve things on the pitch whilst retaining the culture off the pitch which is so important

I think Gareth had run his race and it was the right call from him. The main issue for me is I don't have any confidence in the FA instilling the right man. They lucked into Southgate after the complete and utter farce that was the Allardyce appointment.

Southgate gone on 11:14 - Jul 16 with 3059 views | Steve_M | Yes, clearly the right time but he's done a good job over his tenure. A shame this tournament was a bit muddled after the clarity of approach he had previously brought to the job, too many players past it and the balance of the team never quite being right. Italy was the big chance to win a trophy, Rashford puts his penalty a fraction to the right and we probably would have done.

Very decent man and I wish him well. But believe he's limited, safety first manager that failed to capitalize on the talent available, some of the other 'super powers' (Germany, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Brazil) having transitional periods during his time in charge and will ultimately be rated a lot higher than his abilities by home tournaments, lucky sides of the draws and getting through competitions where 9/10 we'd have been knocked out much earlier. Nonetheless, better to be lucky than good, he did get us to two finals regardless of how many times we should have gone out in 2024 and how easy the run was in 2021, so does deserve a lot of credit, even if I feel he'll get more than his talents actually merited. Considering that he achieved a lot more than teams like the 02, 04, 06 teams that were basically XI's of world class, Champions League winners he deserves recognition. [Post edited 16 Jul 2024 11:25]

Right time to go. General consensus was that people weren't overly happy with his style of football which i get. But he's been a really good England manager, on and off the pitch. The work he's done with the press relationship has been fantastic, the culture he's created in the team, like a club side. The penalty shoot out hoodoo being put to one side (not banished), i never had an overriding fear of penalties under Southgate, whereas before i dreaded them. The night against Columbia in the World Cup when we beat them on penalties was genuinely, one of my favourite ever moments watching England because of what had happened before. FA need to keep him involved as he's a clever guy and to lose him would be a shame.
Southgate gone on 11:20 - Jul 16 with 2921 views | itfc_bucks | Really hope we focus on the positives from his reign. Two finals, a semi- final and generally improving the culture around the England side. Players didn't shrink in the shirt, but grew into it. Yes, you can say what you like about tactics (and I have), but unlike days gone by, a lack of effort or application didn't hold back this squad, and that's not always been the case. I know I'll be downvoted for this, but I do hope it's "Arise, Sir Gareth" in short order.

It will probably be Lee Carsley. Current U21 manager and won the Euros with them last year

Seems to be quite trendy to kick him, both in the media and general public. On the one hand we've qualified for tournaments at a canter, he's got us to WC semi and 1/4 final (where we were unlucky vs. France) and to back to back Euro's finals, losing one on pens and the other to a late Spain goal. Fact of the matter is results wise they're not half bad outcomes. On the other hand the football has be tentative, and its probably fair that we've had some favourable draws and runs, largely falling short when we've faced top opposition. Ultimately I think there's merit in both, he's not the messiah but he's not a complete dog of a manager either and can clearly get a tune out of a group and get them bought in. My conclusion is he leaves with his head held high, has delivered results and I wish him well, but probably the right time for a change.

Southgate - I agree with Vic in that he got some sort of sense of pride and cohesion back in to England after so many debacles. He also took us far into tournaments - a rare thing before him. How much of that is him or better players at his disposal is debatable - but as he is accountable for results, he also should get the credit when they go broadly well. He was no means the worst England manager ever, but it’s time to move on. I wish him well, even if I hope he never manages my club. His way of doing things looks a bit outmoded now and everyone has a sell by date, whatever they do. I have never thought him to be the one to get the best out of this bunch of players. I just hope they can find somebody who can and if that’s Carsley, great.

If you watch our games again, you'll realise that Kane needed players to bomb on past him. Rashford, Grealish, Mane, Musiala etc, all love breaking the line from width or depth and play well with Kane. Saka, Foden and Bellingham all want to cut in or operate in the space central and outside the box...right where Kane drops deep. It congested the space and teams got worse to it. Our management didn't. Genuinely think if we'd gone with Watkins or Toney leading the line, we'd have had more joy. Or a different attacking three in behind. 100% McKenna would've spotted that and set us up to provide different options with his starters & finishers approach...

He was slow and sluggish in this tournament. I am sure it's not the case but he just looked like he couldn't be arsed.

Southgate gone on 12:22 - Jul 16 with 2183 views | bsw72 | What worries me is that the FA now go and feck up everything that Southgate has built over the last 11 years, from when he was the U21 coach. He has turned England back into a serious and competitive national team, who has worked to build relationships with the clubs and the fans. Seems to have worked with the FA to put in place a decent pipeline process through from the age limited teams to the full team. He was also never swayed by the press and handled himself with utmost integrity. I genuinely struggle to see a suitable candidate, although I hope whoever it is surprises like Southgate ultimately did.
Southgate gone on 13:20 - Jul 16 with 1922 views | Clapham_Junction | As well as being one of our most successful national managers of all time, I think one of the main things I will remember him and be grateful for is his decency and integrity, particularly at a time when the country was being led by some of the worst people ever to have held high office. The fact that the England manager and players were bettering the government on moral leadership was not something I would have ever expected from English football.
