Biggest signing in the last 20 years? 10:06 - Aug 15 with 7194 viewssmithy69

Barring McKenna - Kalvin Philips IMO would be our biggest signing in 20 years. England international with 30 caps, who is just 28 years old and was the standout performer at the Euros when we lost to Italy. If McKenna can get him fit and firing - he could genuinely be the difference

I think it’s massive - and I have no doubts there will be some negative responses - but if we can even get him back to 75% of his ability - he’s a huge positive . I think a smallwr club that will show him support is what he needs

Who is bigger? Even 20 years ago, can't think of a League and European winner & England Intnl we've signed?

I always get nervous on signings until I see them holding up the shirt, especially a signing of this magnitude

Profile wise the only one I can think of close to this, and similar in terms of 'shock' is Gio Dos Santos given his previous game was a hattrick for Barca and then he was playing for us in the mid-table of the Championship.

Ivan Campo?
Never played for England but did play for spain, and won two champions leagues with Real Madrid.

Obviously, the highlight of his career was the goal against Barnsley!

Poll: Now that The Athletic has an article, is this takeover actually happening?

Last time I remember such a ‘wow’ reaction was Bullard, because there was a time when he was utterly fantastic. But think this would be our most high-profile signing ever.

Was great at Leeds but that was a long time ago in footy terms.would love for this to work but he will have to upp his game substantially from what he's been doing the last few seasons. Last thing we will want is a big salary with por effort.
That said I don't think Morsey will be the kind of guy to allow any kind of attitude inside the dressing room.

Hope he has the mindset that this could be his chance to restart his career

I wonder if he thrives being the big fish in a smaller pond.

I think he'll just love being a bit of a name tbh. I don't mean that in a cocky way, but everyone loves to be loved don't they, he's human. He's a nobody at City really, relatively speaking. Hasn't played a load of football for a while either, I can imagine it will be a very refreshing change for him to join such a pumped up environment, be a bit of a name that others look up to and help raise the standards of those around him. It should be really empowering.

This. If we get it done he needs a great welcome and a song early doors. If the fans can make him feel loved (which I have always felt our support base does well) then he genuinely could be the difference.

I agree. I think this is the ideal move for him. A manager everyone respects and is massively popular - unlike Moysy at West Ham, and hec comes to a club where everything is positive and supportive. I think it's set up perfectly for him. He and Morsy together could be an awesome pairing.

Poll: Right now, who would you rather have as Prime Minister?

I can't think of a bigger or more exciting signing (if it happens) for a long time. In fact I don't think we've ever signed an international, in his prime player.
- Bullard? Only played a couple of times for England.
- Campo - his best days were behind him.

I'd have to go back to Paul Mariner. He wasn't anywhere near an international when we signed him but he was the next big thing who many top clubs were after. He was a real statement player and proved to be every bit as good as hoped.

Who is the last player we signed who had played for England before we got them? Dyer or Richard Wright coming back?

I think Piotr Malacyzk would like a word.

Also, no Bajner, no party.

John Wark in 1988 ??

He had similar numbers of caps, and a real point to prove as he was in Liverpool reserves following a terrible injury.

Was amazing for two seasons.

It wasn’t the top league though and 36 years ago!
