Matt Penney 12:52 - Jan 8 with 6117 views | BlueandTruesince82 | Has left national league Rochdale after 2 months. His career has taken a real battering. No club for the 23/24 season and then this. Whilst none of us thought he was going to be a superstar I think most would agree he looked a solid lower league full back. Did really well on loan in Scotland (Aberdeen) which is probably about right. Not sure what's not been clicking for him but a great shame.

Matt Penney on 13:08 - Jan 8 with 5069 views | GlasgowBlue | Motherwell. He did well there and they were keen on signing him. Decent enough mid to lower League one left back so it's a shame how his career has gone. Some of the Cook signings (Penney, Haroper, Pigott etc) who didn't make the grade must look at where we are just a couple of years later with envy and regret.

Matt Penney on 13:14 - Jan 8 with 4973 views | jasondozzell | I always liked him but he looked one of those confidence players who needs support. I thought he was good going forward. Cook never seemed to forgive him after he made an error at Plymouth for one of their goals when we lost there (early 21/22 season?). Straight out of the side of I recall correctly and Clements in his place. Hope he can get going again. Football is such a cruel and fragile career sometimes.

Yeah, thought he was really lightweight and not remotely up to the physical side of the game.

For sure. This is never, ever considered as a reason by fans but it's almost certainly the most likely.

Agree. I did think he looked massively lightweight and out of his depth even in L1. Did have a good strike on him but as a defender not what we needed. All that said given his mother well loan I'm amazed he has struggled as much as he has!

Switched off defensively as well. Up there with the worst signings of the Gamechanger era with Pigott, Harper & Dominic Thompson.

Didn’t Pigott’s father pass away soon after joining us? We really have no idea how these things can harm someone. I doubt he’s looking at us with envy and regret though.

Predictable post. He clearly wasn't awful, let alone 'absolutely awful', his career has just gone downhill fast. As someone else has said, probably a confidence player.

Yep, didn't think he was awful by any stretch, obviously wouldn't cut it now, but I've seen plenty worse, and he more than held his own in the SPL. Not sure why his career has taken a nosedive, but like others have said, we don't truly know what goes on behind the scenes.

Bit harsh on Thompson, who started 15 games in defence, of which we lost three and in which we conceded 6 goals.

I watched Pigott against Oxford and it was one of those rare moments where I genuinely thought I could have done a better job.

Aged 26, he has only made about 100 appearances, including substitute appearances. That includes numerous loan spells too. I think it's fine to just acknowledge he wasn't/isn't very good. He had a lovely left peg, but so many other attributes just weren't there. His spell in the team for us was pretty ropey too, the half season under Cook when we were really poor, and McKenna quickly brought in Thompson to replace him. [Post edited 8 Jan 15:36]

Exactly, I don’t wish him any ill, but he was just a bit crap.

I don't think anyone of this forum would claim he was good. But he had enough about him to forge a solid but probably unspectacular lower league career, lower end L1 was probably his limit but he shouldn't be teetering on the brink of dropping out of the game at 26

I've spoken to one of Piggott's best mates and Joe didn't see himself as good enough Ipswich in League 1. So probably no regret as he saw League 2 as his top level.

Disagree to be honest, didn’t see enough about him to warrant playing in the football league.

Yeah, weak as a kitten in defence and no better than Kenlock going forward. Nothing against the guy but he was nowhere near the standard he was asked to play at.
