Southampton game season defining. 16:02 - Jan 26 with 6527 viewsBlue_In_Boston

I watched them v Forest (wife a Forest fan) and also v Newcastle this weekend. They're no mugs, probably more Premier League experience than us so don't write them off. 3 points absolutely essential.

As much as they've become a meme, I'm astonished they have such a paltry points total. They've shown up nicely in several games I've seen.

They will be looking at next Saturday as a game they can win, no doubt about it.

We need to be switched on, on and off the pitch.

Despite their points haul, I think they're a stronger team than us. They were hamstrung by Russell Martin.

That isn't a criticism of us btw, just that we're still playing catch-up and i believe punching above our weight whilst Saints and Leicester are under-performing.

I said it yesterday and I'll keep saying it all week, the crowd can't let their nerves transmit onto the pitch when we play Southampton.

Yes, they are competitive in most games – especially away from home. We need to beat them but if our crowd show up assuming we'll roll them over then it'll add to the difficulty.

If we can’t beat them, then our players need to have a long, hard look at themselves. It’s without doubt a huge game for us. Yes, against City and Liverpool we were expecting nothing but the manner of the performances was disappointing. Home to Southampton is a must win, no excuses.

It's not a given we beat them! We're not levels above them. Last season them and Leicester seemed like impossible asks now we're talking as if we should be steamrollering them. I know we've improved the squad etc but we're still playing catch-up imo and lack the experience of all the other 19 teams in this decision.

If we want to survive, yes we need to beat them but it won't be easy and I personally don't expect it.

As long as we give it everything we've got then the players won't need to take a long hard look at themselves. Even if we give it 100% Southampton are better than a lot of people think.

Their achilles heel is they can't hold on to a lead. But we must be aware that they will be no pushovers. A draw would be a better result for them than us because I do believe they are down and that would just drag us into a worse position than we already are. Need to get feisty and hard to beat.

It’s certainly not a given, but if we have any hope of staying up these are the games we must win. There’s simply no excuse in this game, we need to be ruthless, resolute and tough to beat. Even against sides around us we have been far from convincing. It’s time we draw a line in the sand and start delivering in these type of matches.

If you can’t beat a side that’s bottom of the league on your own patch then, we don’t deserve to stay up. Where are the points coming from if you can’t beat Southampton?

It is the very definition of “must win”! They are rock bottom of the league and every form table for a reason, there is literally no room for anything but 3 points, it’s our best chance of a win in all the remaining games of the season and if we don’t do it, we are in very serious trouble.

Southampton have won one league game all season are on course to get the lowest points total in EPL history and we’re having doubts we can’t beat them? Where do the points come from then, if we can’t beat those sides around us? If we don’t beat them, it will be hugely disappointing and quite frankly it will serve to show we deserve to go down with them.

We've only won 2 more than them though! If we were Liverpool or Man City I'd be agreeing with you. I just expect 100% effort from the players and no complacency from the fans.

I thought we were lucky to draw away at their gaff.

Our games with them have usually been tight.

Would love to be more positive but think it's got a painful draw written all over it.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Our players should be bang up for this, especially the lads who may not get another opportunity to play in the PL if we're relegated.

Davis, Hutch and Delap won't be returning to the Championship, but I doubt anyone else would be snapped up.

Wow, you might as well accept relegation now then. If we were playing Southampton away, I’d take a point now. We aren’t, we are at home with a decent home support in our sails, my point being if we can’t beat the Saints in their current state then we deserve to go down. Otherwise we can make excuses about every EPL team we play between now and the end of season as to why we can’t win it. There simply is no excuses for this game, it’s a must 3pts and our players will know it too.

Said it before, they’re a very decent side. 2 games against them last season could’ve gone either way in all honesty, and a very tight one at St Mary’s earlier this season. Harwood-Bellis, Walker-Peters, Downes, Armstrong, Dibling (injured thankfully), maybe Smallbone, Lallana, Aribo etc, you could make an argument they start for us if we had them.

Thought they were the better side at PR tbh but of course Sarmiento pops up with that winner, the result dictates the narrative and the rest is history. I fear if we have the same central midfield as yesterday we’ll be found wanting.

It’s not a gimme by any stretch, it’s a coin toss. It’s our most winnable game on paper but that’s more by virtue of them relative to others we’ll play, not necessarily us relative to Saints. Gotta be on, fans need to be on it, would be a massive win if we can get it.

Don't think we disagree on much here. If we're going to stay up then we almost certainly need to beat Southampton. It was just the way you said the players would need to take a "long hard look at themselves" if we don't win. Even if we do everything right we still might not win...we might just not be good enough...no need to call anyone out.

I actually think I'm quite positive. I haven't accepted anything yet and I probably won't even if the worst happens on Saturday.

Considering we did the double over Saints last season when the discrepancy between our squads was much larger, failure to beat a struggling Saints side who have only won once this season and missing their star player Dibling would mean we have regressed.

Would like to see the team go all out attack from the whistle, no more fannying at the back and backwards passing all game like the past few we had. Saints are a de facto Championship team and we should treat this just like the games we had last season.

I’m not sure that’s true, I’m pretty sure worse case is we will only be 4 pts from safety still.

Though it's important to comparmentalise performances and results. Southampton dominated us for the majority of the game down here - they had twice the possession, and we were forunate to win it. Same with the game down there. Luck went our way more often than not last season; it's mostly abandoned us this time around.

I’ve sensed some posters thinking we’ve already got the 3 points. It’s one we have to target, but we know they’re a good team despite their low points total. I’ve not seen them since their fraud of a manager left, so it’ll be interesting to see if they’ve changed much.

Could not agree more with this post. They’ve been taken the lead a few times of late, first goal is really important I think. Of late we’ve really lost the nack of scoring first which is what was generally giving us a fighting chance in games earlier on in this season.

They are nowhere near as poor as their points total suggests they are. I think all of the bottom 4 arguably deserve to be on more points than they are, I think there is a very real argument that the quality of this season’s premier league has been as impressive and ruthless as it’s been for some time (even City have struggled badly/ clubs like Bournemouth, Forest and Brentford have been dramatically better. As bad as United and Spurs have been, their “worst” is still never going to embroil them into a relegation battle).
