There are going to many who will be upset with the new manager 06:47 - Jun 20 with 2196 viewsmuccletonjoe

Impossible to get a manager in who is going to please everyone. Many will be disappointed that their preferred candidate didn't get the job, for whatever reason. Myself included.
But when the dust settles and Gary O'Neil starts putting together his team, we will all be behind them and hoping they do well, why are we here otherwise ? I get that if things do not start well, there will be very little good will in the bank like with KM , that is football and the nature of the game. But he does need and deserve a fair start from us.

I think it impossible to get n somebody to please everyone. And with the hatred of the CEO by so many, of the players and even the club by a few, I doubt a clone of Robson, McKenna, Guardiola and Klopp would get any change here.

Of the candidates available, my hope they have found somebody who fits the criteria of what this club needs now, which won’t be the same as 2021 or other clubs.

I’d never heard of McKenna but after Cook’s shambles, it had to be better. Whoever comes in now follows an extremely successful manager, but whose to say given where the club is now he won’t be a good fit? And that’s the key.

Paul Cook is a terrific manager but in my view he just didn’t fit with the club and how it was going to be structured. McKenna did.

Maybe his successor will too. I just hope he gets a clean slate and time as he will from me and as all new managers have done previously.

In terms of goodwill, we know there will be zilch on here from the contingent of hate. The new guy will be lucky to get through pre-season. Fortunately, the mood in the ground will be far more positive and hopefully patient.

You are 100% right. He does deserve and need a fair start from us.

Seems to me that there is a sense of entitlement amongst some of our fans and that we should be attracting a “bigger” name than GON. Thomas Frank for example is a top PL coach and has a record which, with all due respect to ourselves, should land him an established PL club, not one which is realistically going to be in a relegation battle all season. Maybe we’re not as compelling and attractive a proposal as some want to believe we are?

Not entitlement.

Ashton says “looking at all markets” and then appoints the laziest appointment going.

Things are going to turn sour very quickly this season.

People need to be conscious and aware what “success” looks like this season as well. If he finishes 17th that is going to be a success but that means there might be some tough moments where we need to back him and not sh!t the bed.

I think you're right about a level of entitlement.

But MA's comment about searching high and low maybe raised hopes to high. A high profile (Frank, Rodgers, etc) would have been great but GON is probably the level we're realistically at. Hopefully in a couple of years time we'll be in a place where we can look at the next level up in managers

On 21 Feb you said of McKenna: ‘It’s time, I’m sorry. He’s finished here, too many mistakes, dreadful transfer windows obsession with wingers (he inherited Cooks great work don’t forget)‘

On 2 December you wanted McKenna gone with more than 30 others on here.

In what way is GON a lazy appointment? Are you saying that MA and the owners, who have regenerated this club, had a nose through the Sun for who’s available and just sent a WhatsApp?

What and who would not be a lazy appointment, especially given you wanted last season’s manager sacked during it despite two promotions and one to come in four years? What’d make you happy?

Some people are just happy to be miserable and moaning, let them sulk. I’m pleased with the appointment.

This is your fault for listening to Ashton though. He'd tell us anything if it suited him, judge him on what he does.

Being unhappy because GON isn't your preferred choice is one thing, but you're being a proper weapon over this trying to whip up resistance to him before he gets going.

It's like the gobby minority who went after Royle before he joined and never let go they were wrong all over again.

The more I think about it.... the more I'm glad Kieran left. He deserves a shot at a club up the pecking order who are more established than us. If he'd stayed, it would be a tough old gig and a successful 4th from bottom would still take chunks out of him. I'm very sad he left, but happy we've got our legacy and good memories.

For a relegation battle..... I can't see GON being that much less than Kieran....or even a step up. If we'd had a squad where we only needed to replace a few players and the squad was more PL quality, then it's different.... but we're going to have to rebuild the team.
Bit underwhelming and I don't want to do a puff piece on GON ...but I'll come round to it.

Well, given your track record of near 100% relentless negativity, including wanting MA and KM gone many months ago, slaughtering the likes of Philogene, Clarke and Hirst (just the meagre 40 goals between them), perhaps what comes out of your keyboard should be taken ‘with a pinch of salt’.

Go on, try saying something positive about the three promotions in four seasons looking forward to the second Premier League season in a quarter of a century club. Just one thing. That you like the mural above the club shop, the new car park, Tingly Teds, anything.

Why can’t we do what Sunderland did? Or Leeds? Why is it that we don’t think that’s possible when it was for those clubs? We are objectively in a better position as a club than Sunderland were when they were promoted.

Just interested why, with this appointment, we seem to have adopted the brace position immediately.

I think this is the issue.
We will be amongst the favourites to go down and there is a reasonable possibility we will.
To use your phrase, we had many people sh!tting the bed here last season and what happened? We went up!
I despair at the entitlement we sometimes display here.
I just don't know what people expect.
We sing EEJB but seem to forget the most important line - Follow the Town. Up or down.
The GON appointment doesn't get me jumping up from the chair but he hasn't even officially signed yet and some have written him/the season off already.
Why are some people incapable of playing the long game these days? I guess short termism and the "I want it all and I want it now" is just how society is now.
I sometimes wonder how supporters of 3rd and 4th division teams cope!

"Look, I don't wanna be the same as everybody else. That's why I'm a Mod, see?"

The thing is I really don’t have feelings one way or the other about him. I’m pleased it’s not a Gerrard style ‘name’. We had all that with madman Keane and it was never going to work here. An up and coming coach? We could do that in 2021 given the position the club was in and its financial advantage. We are in a totally different place now so the requirements are not the same.

Assuming it is GON, aside from management skills, I just hope he settles, buys into what the club is and the area. The latter is not for everyone. It may do and all I hope is that people give the man a chance and a little bit of time. He will certainly get it from me.

Ah. The Sunderland argument.
Quite simply we were nowhere near good enough.
Every once in a while a promoted team will go on to have a superb season. Remember 00/01?
History shows us that is rare though.
Leeds were able to build a much stronger squad during their time in the Championship than we could and stayed up too. Didn't we have 6 or 7 players from our League 1 team feature against Liverpool?
That was the reality of our last campaign.

Yes but this coming season isn’t the same as our last season in the prem. we are in a stronger position than Sunderland were.

Why have we assumed 17th is our limit when others clubs have proved it doesn’t have to be.

I don’t know because I’m not a manager scout. But are you telling me that the almost constant conveyor belt of talented managers from across Europe and the world stopped this year?

I wanted a bold, talented coach with a high ceiling and a fresh approach. Not a brace position, attritional, 17th if everything goes well appointment.

I would have appointed Kim Hellberg above GON. the data suggested he was a brilliant coach and he’s talked about as a future elite manager.

You’re free to disagree but to answer your question, that’s the sort of appointment I wanted. Clubs like us need to do something different. A manager needs to add real value.

This is an utterly pathetic appointment. But he’ll have my support when the season starts.

Let's give it all a proper judge come August when we have a new playing and coaching staff.

Then judge again after 10 games, we will know everything we need to know by then.

Our last manager got us 22 points in the Premier League, some may say the bar required is low. Hellberg couldnt even get a side with the Sainted Hackney out of the Championship after being way clear early in the season, and ended up being the only side in history to lose in the play offs twice in the same season...thats how easy it is to be a manager!
