In my view Fiorentino is a clear 6, while Palacios is a clear 8. Lukic is something in beteeen, but probably more seen as an 8. Selection might depend on who we are playing, but my guess would be Fiorentino and Palacios seen as first choice quite often, but we will see. On paper a fantastic aquisation. |  |

Exactly this. There were numerous matches in the first half of that season where we went toe to toe with the opposition. But when we needed to freshen the side up in the second half we were turning to the likes of Al-Hamadi, Taylor and Harness (initially anyway).
Having a much stronger starting 11 is massive but having a bench of equal quality is just as important. |  | | |

We'll need at least 4 Premier League quality central midfielders this season, and while Matusiwa still has a question mark over him at this level, he did everything he could have last season to give us the impression that he can step up. With Palacios, Lukic & Luis, there is no doubt as to their ability.
An injury or a suspension (I'm looking at you Sasa) could really hurt us in this League.
They will be the 4, mostly played as pairs in a 'double pivot' with Luis & Matusiwa being the deeper, more defensive partner, while Lukic & Palacios have more licence to carry the ball into dangerous areas.
What I like most though, about how O'Neill is speaking, is the promise of adaptability, so other combinations, sometimes of 3 will be on the table for when the game requires it, rather than being wedded to a strict formation. That will also bring Nunez into the equation on occasion, who could prove to be a real asset in unlocking a top defensive unit with his quality passing, in a midfield 3. Let's not forget that he was seen as a top Championship, full international, midfielder with Premier League ambitions when we signed him.
It's hard to see us go up against a midfield of Rice & Guimaraes and take them on in a like for like set up, especially ar the Emirates; I think we'll have 3 in there from time to time, perhaps with one acting as the central attacker when in possession. | |
