Burnley's Marney on Jewell's Wish List
Burnley's Marney on Jewell's Wish List
Wednesday, 15th Jun 2011 22:26

TWTD understands that Burnley midfielder Dean Marney is amongst the many players on Blues boss Paul Jewell’s summer wish list. The Town manager is looking to add up to five more signings before the new season gets under way on Saturday 6th August, including a replacement for skipper David Norris, whose switch to Portsmouth was confirmed earlier today.

Marney, 27, started his career with Tottenham, during which time he went out on loan to Swindon, QPR, Gillingham and Norwich.

Having made only four starts and seven sub appearances for Spurs, scoring two goals, both in a 5-2 victory over Everton, the Barking-born player joined Hull City in July 2006 for an undisclosed fee believed to be around the £1 million mark.

After four years, 111 starts, 27 games from the bench, nine goals and a promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs with the Tigers, 6ft tall Marney moved to Burnley for a fee reported to be around £500,000 in May 2010. In his first season at Turf Moor he made 37 starts and played four games as a sub, scoring three goals.

A one-time England U21 cap, the box-to-box midfielder, who was previously linked with the Blues in 2007 when with Hull, has another two years remaining on his Burnley contract.

Meanwhile, Doncaster Rovers chairman John Ryan says striker Billy Sharp, the subject of a £2.3 million Town offer earlier in the summer, wouldn’t have joined the Blues even if they had persisted in their interest rather than switching their attention to Michael Chopra: “They wouldn’t have come back in for Billy anyway. Billy didn’t want to go to Ipswich.”

Elsewhere, Connor Wickham was again an unused sub as England’s U21s drew 0-0 with Ukraine in their second game at the UEFA European Championship in Denmark.

Doncaster Rovers chairman John Ryan is beginning to get right up my nose, to be honest!

Weve got more chance of getting Billy the Fish than Billy Sharpe. Like Dean Marney, very good at this level. Speculation only though.

Marney seemed like a decent prospect while at Spurs, but while at Hull and Burnley he's hardly shone at all.
If I was a Doncaster fan then the chairman's comments would be exactly what I'd want to hear, so I can't knock him for that

Useless with no presence upfront, how is Connor not getting an appearance?

Keep saying we need a taller midfield, don't know enough about marney to comment however.

in a interview billy sharpe said "danny graham and steve morison have moved to premier clubs so i have a chance"

he should realise that if no bids come in for him from premier clubs he will be stuck fighting off league 1 next season.

as for you mr ryan a league 1 striker is not worth as much as a championship striker

big gambles from both of them.

TO EVERY FAN - IT'S "SHARP" NOT "SHARPE".... really annoying me.

As to the actual article, John Ryan is being an idiot if he really thinks that.

And I'd take Marney.

On wikipedia it suggests that Marney also covered at RB in his early days so this could help the squad by providing emergency cover as we're not exactly overflowing with RBs.

From Wikipedia:-

"Although predominantly a box to box midfielder he showed an aptitude at right back and understudied then Spurs right back Stephen Carr, and was viewed by many as the Irish international's natural successor. He really emerged onto the scene in a mid season friendly against Irish champions Bohemians putting in a man of the match performance from right back."

What he meant to say,

boll*$ks i did not plan on ipswich going after someone else and now my gamble has not worked the least i can do now is TRY and wind them up ( getting the last word in on a non story like little kids in the playground because we have moved on and you have not )
i would myself like to thank mr ryan for rejecting our bid because now we have a better striker in place for next season IMHO.
but we might now come in for Donny dog £50.000 on a two year contract.

This is the kind of player we could do with being linked with. Been in the championship and prem in the last few years and entering the so called prime years. That said, the belgian midfield player bloke person wots his name we've been linked with looks a better option. Just cant help but feel we're starting to lack numbers?

Don't know what happened there!

England could have used Connor today...as a previous poster stated we had little presence up front. What's more. I have watched both England games and all three Canada games without a glimpse of our Tractor Boys! Psycho. please dont let us down for the next game!
