Sears Switch Confirmed
Friday, 16th Jan 2015 13:05

Town have confirmed the signing of striker Freddie Sears from Colchester United on a deal until the summer of 2017 for an undisclosed fee. The 25-year-old has scored 14 goals for the struggling League One side this season.

The former West Ham man was at Playford Road this morning to finalise a switch and Sears will travel with the squad to Millwall today ahead of Saturday's game.

While a place on the bench is most likely, the frontman could start with David McGoldrick a doubt with a knee problem suffered in Wednesday's FA Cup defeat to Southampton.

Sears came through the ranks at West Ham where he eventually went on to make 25 starts and 33 sub appearances, scoring three goals.

While with the Hammers he spent time on loan with Crystal Palace, Coventry, Scunthorpe and Colchester before making his move to the U's permanent in July 2012.

Capped by England at U19, U20 and U21 levels, Sears has scored 36 goals in 81 starts and 28 sub appearances for the U's, including during his loan spell. The Hornchurch-born player's U’s contract was up in the summer.

Small fee. Young. Goals in the league below. Just what the doctor ordered. Definitely worth a punt for me.

Well done Mick and the team.

And welcome Freddie! COYBs!

Just hope Sears does better than our last great signing from Col U.

A very good signing, with just under 1 goal every 2 starts at Colchester which is a very good return. He's now at an age where he'll soon be hitting his prime - coupled with a move to a premierleague chasing club he'll be over the moon about this! Could make his debut against Millwall - perfect for a West Ham lad!

Great! so then, assuming Didz is fit, give Sears a start vs Millwall and rest Murphy. Give Murph a chance for a break as he's been involved in pretty much every game and allow Sears to bang in one or two against a side that are currently about league 1 standard. Get Sears confidence up from day one and our top scorer a bit of a rest ready for the bigger games in future.

Welcome, very happy with this. I hope he can develop under MM and coaching from TC and he will help us push on from here! Welcome to your new home just up the A12! :)

And ultimately we'll sell for far more than we paid. Good business in the making. Great work all round.

No need for Sharp thanks.

We know he has potential form his time with West Ham, shame since then he has been a bit of a journeyman and playing in a poor Colchester team hasn't really put him on anybodies radar. But we've snapped him up and quietly optimistic he'll do ok for us!

Like-should be a button for that!

This is how I like our business to be done. No messing about with rumours, just straight in and done.
I was a bit skeptical when I saw that he'd signed but, as people have pointed out, he has a similar League 1 record to Didz. Bang a few in against Millwall and we'll all be very happy!

'Undisclosed fee'

Hmmm, that's going to throw the media hacks that have all been going on about how our team cost only £10,000... they're going to have to add 'and a bit more undisclosed' or something now...

Wonder what sort of fee he has commanded?

Got to hand it to MM, yesterday he said no striker signing imminent. Remember the days of Jewell & even Magilton, when the saga of signings would go on for days or weeks, and eventually usually nothing happened! Welcome Freddie, and with coaching from TC you could become a star. Here's hoping

Firstly yet another example of buisness being done on the QT by MM. This morning, Town are looking for a striker but no one is line up at present.

This afternoon, Oh we've signed someone.

Bit of an odd one to me this, He's had his struggles, he pinged all over the palce on loan and never really did much, this season he seems to have hit form, I'm undecided but as always trust MM and TC to get the most out of players. The last guy to come from Col U with a decent rep didnt work out to well, but 14 goals is not to be sniffed at.

Would love to see Sharp added as well.

I dont know that much about Sears other than that he was highly rated as a youngster and never quite reached that potential, until now. Its defiantely worth a punt!

I do like the way we do buisness right now
