Webster Out Until After International Break
Thursday, 10th Aug 2017 14:26

Central defender Adam Webster has been ruled out until the international break due to the ankle injury he suffered in Tuesday’s 2-0 Carabao Cup win at Luton. Better news ahead of Saturday's trip to Barnsley is that Luke Hyam is back in training and Cole Skuse, Jordan Spence, Tommy Smith and Joe Garner are all expected to be fine after knocks, although Grant Ward is yet to train.

Webster, who was making his first start since January, was replaced at half-time by debutant Luke Woolfenden at Kenilworth Road.

“Adam went to see the specialist yesterday, he’s in a boot today,” manager Mick McCarthy said at his pre-match press conference, which was shown live by TWTV.

“He’ll be going to see another one to have a bit of treatment. He’s not good for Saturday, he’ll be after the international break, I think.”

Will he consider bringing somebody in as defensive cover or is he happy with 18-year-old Woolfenden as back-up? “That’s going to have to be the case for now, but I’ve got pretty versatile players. Jonas Knudsen can play left-sided centre-back and Tommy Smith centrally. Chambo can play right side, as can Spence.

“Dominic Iorfa could play there. I could play Wardy at right wing-back without too many problems.

“I don’t want to be shifting people about but there’ll be nobody coming in here for Saturday’s game.”

Regarding Spence, Smith and Garner, who missed Tuesday’s match after complaining of knee, back and shoulder problems respectively, he added: “Jordan Spence trained today, Tommy Smith trained today, as I thought they would.

“Joe Garner was always going to train, Joe just went and had some preventative medicine on his shoulder, a shoulder injection, that should help strengthen it, that’s fine.

“Wardy hasn’t trained, he got a really nasty knock [on the calf]. It was big [Cheikh] Ndoye who kicked him [on Saturday], accidentally, I might add, there was nothing in it, but he’s a big boy and I think if he kicks you you’ll stay kicked for a while.

Skusey’s all right, Skusey came through it, he jarred his knee but he’s all right, he’s pretty durable, thank goodness.

“The good news is that Luke Hyam was out training, he trained this morning with the squad that were out there and trained really well.

“I hope there’s no unnecessary negative feedback from that. I don’t think so, I’ve just seen him and he had a big smile on his face. That’s a first, believe me.”

Teddy Bishop (groin), Tom Adeyemi (recovering from illness) and Emyr Huws (achilles) are unlikely to be back before the second round Carabao Cup tie in the week commencing Monday 21st August.

“I would look at whoever we’re playing in the next cup tie,” McCarthy continued. “I would like to think that Tom and Emyr could be, but they might be after the international break.

“Hyamsy trained really well, so maybe he might get a game in that. Teddy Bishop, no he won’t be involved.”

If Ward fails to make it for Saturday’s game, would he be happy with Tristan Nydam retaining his place in midfield having made his debut on Tuesday? “No problem at all, he was excellent at Luton. I was delighted with him.

“But we’ve got Bersant Celina that could play there in the system that we’re playing. Waggy [Martyn Waghorn] came on and did it very well actually.

“We’ve got options there. Strangely this year we’ve got forward options and midfield and defence are getting decimated.”

I still think we need another player as an option at the back. An experienced player to come in and do a job in a couple of positions, like Kevin Foley in 15/16

On the upside; now Evans can't sell him before aug 31th.

Hyamsy? You serious, Mick.
Hope Webster's ankle isn't going to one of these things that keeps going wrong. That, on the top of Andre Dozzell's shocker, would be a bad start to the season.

Loan may be the best option here then up until January. Massive shame to lose Webster to injury but wish him a speedy recovery!

Going by injuries, doubts and whose available. I think he'll line up 3-5-2 Saturday with.

Bart
Iorfa, spence, chambers, smith, Knudsen
Downes skuse
Celina
Garner mcgoldrick

Even though we're massively hit with injuries that's a good side with "waggy" coming off the bench

Bit provocative perhaps but I don't think Hyam and Bishop with ever feature again in first team and we should look to lend them out with a view to eventual sale. Simply too much of a drain on resources from little return.

Does anyone know what the illness Adeyemi has actually is. Always sounds a bit sinister but patently debilitating for him. Even man flu doesn't last that long.

Hyamsy - he's definitely taking the Mick with the nicknames at this stage.

"Teddy Bishop, no he won't be involved.” - no mention of injury or illness & he has previously, conspicuously, left his name out of comments on the younger players and squad. It sounds as though there's something more in the background here I'm afraid.
I didn't see the press conference, so maybe the tone of the comment was benign, but as I read it above the quote jumped out at me.

3-5-2 on Sat then Saturday with.

Bart
Iorfa, spence, chambers, smith, Knudsen
Downes skuse
Celina
Garner Sears

Didzy and Waggers make the mid-week team at Millwall unless Garner and Sears tear it up on Sat! In which case we could be top and official dark horses. Unlikely....but this season does feel different....for now at least.

Hope Webster is not always going to be injury prone. He's a real prospect, but this isn't helping his development.

Massive blow this one, our stand out defender for sure. It might be the case of parking that 'bus' over the next month, or maybe 7 of them!! We are certainly lightweight in defence now, as we were short of quality already imo.

Ps - Won't be a apologising for a negative post, as I can't see a positive in it!!

We should have brought in cover when Berra departed. Now we are talking playing folk out of position. We don't even have Digby now

This is blow, but sadly Webster is injury prone. He was injured when we bought him.

Adeyemi Still recovering from illness? Might not be back for a few weeks? Very odd that one.

Cat - its one player - one who did not play except for a few minutes last Saturday. Chambers/Smith/Iorfa/Spence/Knudsen is a decent and flexible group. Yes it leaves little back up, but of course we can switch to 4-4-2 if forced. Not asking you to apologise for the "negativity" as like most of us you have got used to fearing the worst - but this is the most positive start to a new season in a while due to the signings, and more importantly the change in MM from pervious years in terms of selection, outlook and decent communication.

I just hope we haven't got another crock on our hands...Hyam and Bishop are bad enough, they say things happen in three's!

happybeingblue added 17:39 - Aug 10
it certainly seems that webster is a crock unfortunately a big defender who always gets injured?? its not like hes getting kicked from pillar to post each week, he is basically unreliable like bishop and co, so time to replace him with another like i predicted a few weeks back, but i thought he would last more than 2 games. frustrating but you need players you can rely, look at chambo he hardly ever gets injured and he really puts his body on the line! at least we can rely on him unlike the usual crocks... lets hope dids gives us a few more games this year...

dalianwasexciting - agree in part, it had been a very positive start to the season and useful new additions have been brought in, which is good, but they are other topics.
Onto the defence, Iorfa looks quality, I rate Spence & Kenlock, but that's it for me! If you rate the others, fine, I don't, so time will tell on that one, in whatever format they are played.
Ref my tongue in cheek remark about negativity!! it's sad that I feel some posters can't be honest on here for fear of getting almost 'linched'. Personally, I don't give a "flying one" so there will be negativity (without apologises) from time to time, if I think it's called for. What you will get from me though, more importantly, is honesty!

The problem is that the reason we are able to bring in players like Williams (and now it looks like Webster) is that they are 'injury prone'. Yep they are cheaper than others, but there is a reason.

Unfortunately given that the cupboard is bare we are stuck with getting what we can and hoping for the best.

A slow spiral downward, I'm afraid.

I can't see Hyam getting much game time anymore and dare I say it, but even at 18 Downes is a better option than Hyam. Downes still has the same work rate and tenacity as Hyam and loves a tackle, but he's more forward thinking. Call him Hyam mark II if you like. He drives forward and looks for a forward pass. Hyam is just very ordinary and a limited footballer, who's had more leeway, due to being a local boy

I think that's harsh on Webster, we beat a fee clubs to him including PL if I recall

Lee- i think the comments re Bish were benign. Having watched the whole conference he got a positive mention later. He gets names fired at him so it's easy to forget one or two at any stage. I feel MM definitely still sees him as part of the squad. He spoke about him and Hyam to come in and takd over from Downes and Nydam if needed.

Shame about Webster. Only just come back after his last injury. Wishing him a speedy recovery.
