Town have agreed a fee with Bristol City for central defender Adam Webster.

It was initially reported that the Blues would receive £5 million for the 23-year-old, however, the Bristol Post says the initial figure is £3.5 million rising to £8 million, presumably after appearance milestones as per the deal which saw Aaron Cresswell join West Ham in 2014.

TWTD understands some of the fee the Blues will receive will go to Webster's former club Portsmouth, who are due a percentage of the profit Town have made on the deal, believed to be 20 per cent.

Webster cost the Blues £700,000 plus Matt Clarke - who is believed to have been valued at £100,000 - when he signed in the summer of 2016.

The defender is at Ashton Gate this afternoon to undergo a medical with the deal looking likely to go through later today.

News that the Robins had renewed their interest in Webster broke last night as a replacement for Aden Flint, who has moved to Middlesbrough for £7 million.

Webster made 48 starts and five sub appearances in an injury-hit spell, scoring one goal.

The money received for Webster gives greater scope for new boss Paul Hurst to pay fees as he looks to add to his squad ahead of the new season, having already signed Trevoh Chalobah on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

As reported earlier, Hurst is in the process of trying to sign free agent former Crawley Town winger Jordan Roberts, while another wideman, a central defender to replace Webster and probably a striker are likely to be among his other targets.

Earlier this week the Blues were linked with a move for Blackpool centre-half Curtis Tilt, while Shrewsbury's Aristote Nsiala, also a central defender, has been mentioned in connection with Town on a number of occasions, although his former boss Hurst played down those reports on Monday.

With Portsmouth cashing in on this, PH will see very little or this and have a tricky job on his hands trying to find a replacement of a similar standard. FFS Marcus, a little more resolve on the negotiation table please !

That said Hurst must have a target in mind, perhaps someone less injury prone than Webster? The money has to be reinvested in a new player for this to be worth it. I have faith in Hurst and ME that it will.

Mr_Evans added 15:48 - Jun 27 I'm disappointed but I'd assume ME probably left it in PH's court. As a new manager, PH will have a clear picture in his head of some of the players he'd like to bring into the club. I suspect this is a ‘1 step back to try and make two steps forward' kind of thing.

And you can bet that Bartoaz will be off for a minimal fee this summer. After all the good energy that has been surrounding the club right now, certainly deflating with this.

Would rather he stayed but be fair to Evans he has turned down big money before (for another injury prone player in particular) and let's face it although we all insisted we keep DMG at the time enough of us have battered him since for not taking the dosh..its a tough one..... be keen to hear what Hurst says. Let's say Pompey get 10% thata 1.2 mill total (700k fed plus 500k sell on).an so 3.8 mil profit on a sick note...... not the worst deal and despite what some would have us believe running a club like ours takes actual money. We said give it time so let's..... Might (note MIGHT, not asserting anything here) be part of a grand plan...

AshFinland added 15:53 - Jun 27 Really don't understand why some of you are up in arms about this. The bloke has looked decent in spells, shaky in others, and has spent half his time here injured. I keep hearing the argument that we should have taken the money for McGoldrick when we had the chance. How is this different? The only negative I can see from getting 5 million quid for a relatively unproven Championship centre half is that we are now even lighter in that department. However, from everything I've seen of Paul Hurst, I can't imagine that he doesn't have a plan to rectify this situation.

Fat_Boy_Tim added 15:54 - Jun 27 Hurst said he'd need to sell before he bought so let's hope this is it done. As a guess, Town will get 3.5 to 4 mill out of it. We've looked at a few left backs so maybe Hurst is thinking of moving Knudsen into the middle??

It's as simple as that! £5m isn't even much money in this day and age. Could easily double in value after a good season of staying fit. I hope Hurst has something up his sleeve with the money.

ME totally to blame for this one.

So long as Hurst is given the proceeds to spend on the squad, I'll trust his decision making. He no doubts wants to shape the squad the way he sees fit and selling a seemingly injury-prone player for this kind of money presumably gives him the platform to do that.

I've just watched a video from a Bristol City pundit who is saying that Bristol are getting 5m up front & then the rest in add ons & if Boro get promoted. In fact they will get 4m as Swindon will get a 1m. Now if we put things into perspective 5m is a good fee for a player who has been blighted with injuries, the main thing in this deal is can Hurst reinvest the money back into the squad, if we can it s a good bit of business. In Paul Hurst we trust, COYB!

BlueHarwich added 16:05 - Jun 27 PH has already stated if they're good enough then age doesn't matter and from what I've seen myself and heard from Chelsea friends Chalobah isn't coming to make the numbers up. As long as at least some of the fee is reinvested then I'm going to trust the manager. On another note it's nothing more than a sideways step for Webster ( if not backwards), Bristol are selling all their best players so good luck with that move!
