Villa Activate Philogene Matching Rights Wednesday, 10th Jul 2024 11:15 Hull City winger Jaden Philogene’s former club Aston Villa are reported to have activated matching rights on the Blues target in the latest twist what’s turning into a transfer saga.
Town have agreed a double deal with the Tigers for Philogene and central defender Jacob Greaves understood to be worth between £35 and £40 million up front plus add-ons.
The Greaves deal is all but done but there continues to remain a question regarding the acquisition of Philogene, whose valuation is understood to be £18 million of the overall deal.
According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Villa, who sold the 22-year-old to Hull for £5 million a year ago, have now matched Town’s offer as is their right as per the deal they did last summer.
According to , that deal included a 30 per cent sell-on - which would reduce the fee should he return to Villa Park - and personal terms were pre-agreed.
If the Tigers now receive higher bids from Town or other clubs, Villa will then have to decide whether to remain in the race. Previously it was reported Villa, who had the option to match Philogene bids within 72 hours, accept that ultimately the decision will come down to the player.
Everton and Crystal Palace are also believed to still be keen, despite the move to Town having appeared to be the most likely option with their offer the only one previously having been accepted by the East Yorkshire side and with personal terms agreed.
Elsewhere, Football Insider reports that former England U21 international Philogene has told friends he wants to join Town, while neither Philogene nor Greaves have travelled to Turkey with the Hull City squad for a pre-season trip.
Philogene, who has two years left on his Hull contract with the club having an option for another season, joined Villa’s academy from the Pro:Direct Academy and spent spells on loan with Stoke and Cardiff City prior to making his £5 million switch to the MKM Stadium a year ago.
Cottingham-born Greaves, 23, the son of former Hull City and York City defender Mark Greaves, came through the ranks at his local club, spending time on loan with Cheltenham in 2019/20.
In 2023/24, his fourth campaign in the Tigers’ first team, he was was named in the EFL Championship Team of the Season and also carried off his club’s Player of the Year award. Everton and Tottenham have also been linked. Greaves is contracted to Hull until the summer of 2026 with the club having an option for a further year.
The central defender has had his medical at Town and has agreed a four-year contract with that deal awaiting the completion of the Philogene switch.
Meanwhile, Town are expected to complete the signing of Manchester City striker Liam Delap, 21, at some point today with the player believed to be due at the club for a medical.
As reported on Monday, Delap was at Portman Road last Thursday with a £15 million fee subsequently agreed with the Premier League champions plus a further £5 million in add-ons.
Former Town loanee Jeremy Sarmiento, 22, is being linked with a loan move to Scottish Premiership Aberdeen.

So Villa can buy him back with a discount of £5.4m due to the 30% clause, then promptly sell him for the current £18m that is on the table . ,making themselves a tidy profit . Wouldn't put it past them to do so!.

All pretty clear, but people seem to be getting confused between a buy-back clause, and a matching rights clause. Villa had a buy-back clause in JP's contract which would have allowed them to buy him back for a pre-arranged fee of £15m IF Hull were promoted to the Premier League. Villa also apparently have a matching rights clause, which forces Hull to make them aware of any bids they receive for JP, which Villa can then match should they choose to do so; can't find any information related to that clause which states they only have that right if Hull are in the same division as Villa... There is also the 30% sell-on clause, which would mean that if we've bid £18m for JP and Villa match that, they would only have to pay £12.6m for JP (Villa would be due 30% of £18m from the sell on clause) It all smells of Villa hoping to persuade a player they don't particularly want "on the cheap", with a view to sell on at a later date for a profit; given that JP wasn't given much of a chance first time around at Villa hopefully he'll see through that.

Annie M you said “don’t think I’ve ever witnessed such a bloody circus in trying to sign a player, have you?” What about Ian Crook? He famously agreed to leave Norwich to join Ipswich at the end of the 1995–96 season, even posing for photos with his new shirt and buying his children replica kits before changing his mind and re-signing for City days later. At least Philogene is still wearing his Hull City top in all the pictures

Blues1.. I don’t doubt such a clause exists or that it doesn’t rely on Hull being in the prem. it’s also possible there is a set figure they would be able to buy him back at if Hull were in the prem. it’s all speculation and I can’t believe how many hissy fits and the abundance of stropping and flouncing is going on. Phil always puts the caveats in if it’s “believed” or “Reported” or “TWTD understands” unless he’s posting irrefutable facts. People need to calm down and imagine as was the case a couple of weeks ago that we weren’t known to be talking to Hull, Man City or any of the players associated.

Melchester Rovers, Fulchester United and AFC Richmond have also matched our offer apparently.

@arniem I remember a similar circus: trying to sign Hassan Kachloul back in 2001...

In fairness, would be a very bold move from him, as a left winger, to go back to Aston Villa nine days after they have just spent a combined €25.8m on two left wingers (Samuel Iling-Junior from Juve for €14 and Lewis Dobbin from Everton for €11.8)... Call me crazy, but the deal is still on and he will be announced along with Greaves and Delap ahead of the flight to Austria on Monday.

Villa trying to rein us in and they want a piece of the Ipswich cash, upset that Hull making a mint on "their' player, as we are having to overpay to get sellers to understand we mean business to try to avoid all the trading at the end of the window and to try and get these players a bigger slice of pre season with us.

Calm down, calm down!! It's called negotiation. We're in the big boys league now. This is how the sharks swim in the Premier league pool. There's no honour among thieves so we just need to hold our nerve. If it doesn't work we move on.

This has got nothing to do with the players character he can't go anywhere at the moment due to this ridiculous buy back clause.
