I lived in Southampton for a couple of years, and actually went to the game the last time they met in the League Cup which was first time in 10 or so years they played so was a massive game.
Wasn't hard to get a ticket to, and was a sell out.
It's no bigger than Ipswich-Norwich, and the fan bases are no bigger either - if we haven't played Norwich for 5 years and have them in a night game in the league Cup then tickets would be gold dust.
But having experienced both games, there's barely anything in it - your claim about half the fan base is one of the more outlandish I've seen on here. |  |

Sheffield derby never sells out. Pompey v saints is a far bigger derby with more hatred. If you combine both Sheffield clubs fanbases with Pompey and saints, Pompey and saints have the bigger combined fanbases. |

It's true. A lot of people will watching in pubs also. Fanzones at being put up for the game. Outside of arsenal Spurs and the manc and scouse clubs it's the biggest derby in England. |

It stems from a period when they were promotion rivals between 1974 & 1979. It was stoked by the antics of various managers, including Allison, Venables & Mullery.
There was also a controversial FA Cup replay in 1976 when Palace won 1-0 but Brighton thought they'd equalised from a late penalty but the referee ordered a re-take for encroachment when it had only been Palace defenders encroaching & the re-take was saved.
There was an even more controversial league game in 1989 when Palace were pushing from promotion & Brighton struggling to beat the drop. Palace won 2-1 at home, despite missing 3 of the 4 penalties which the referee awarded to the home side. He also awarded Brighton a penalty, which they scored. [Post edited 22 Sep 2019 22:32]
