No doubt some will, once more call this a waste of money.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

Not at all, it's a relatively inexpensive but effective and clearly appreciated gesture. Not entirely sure why it should have to wait to November though, presumably to get two lots of headlines about it.

It is quite a nice idea, almost socialist really. I look forward to it being extended to other people who have served their country but in a different way, perhaps to NHS staff or other public sector workers who serve their country day in day out.

Might be wrong but think the Maximum Italian only made *his* train run on time... hence where the saying came from.

Will need to check.

I thought it was mainly used in jest because of the awful things he did.

Although Mussolini did use it as propaganda that his regime sorted the trains out but that's only partially true (and that's at a push).

The cynic within me thought that it was just WW2 vets. If they were 20 in 1945 they would be 95 now so hardly anyone would benefit.
It's for all ex-servicemen (I'm sure that includes all genders) so a decent call but who pays for it? - the govt. or the rail companies.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Well deserved, the cost of rail travel baffles me though, so expensive when you compare it to flying and driving, especially when you consider that so many trains are absolutely packed.

I might be missing something but a Network Railcard costs the same as this and also gets you a third off. What's the difference?

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

Network Railcard only covers a limited area doesn't it? London and the south east. I assume the card for vets will be national.

Yep. I assume there's other cards for other regions but not sure. I guess it's pretty good if it covers the whole country but seems like a bit of a PR exercise by the Tories to me.

The cost of trains is horrific.
I've a meeting a Lotus cars and the train is £100 return from wiltshire and that's with a Railcard. I want to get the train, more relaxing and comfortable.

Crazy.

Agreed on the price front, it is absurd how much even short trips can cost.

We should be, as a country, trying to prioritise public transport.

I know a few people (not friends mind) that literally won't take public transport because they see it as scummy, which is mind blowing.

It's a nice idea. Most people are appreciative of the military but don't worship it like you do. It doesn't mean we aren't grateful to have you.

Am I missing something here?

All these vets be they cooks, mechanics, musicians or troopers etc were paid to do a job that they entered into of their own free will.

This is not paid for by Government or train companies it is paid for by the taxpayer. i.e. other working folk.

Why should they receive it when a fireman, a nurse or other hardworking taxpayers do not. Shouldn't the discounts be applied to lower the cost of rail travel across the board for everyone.

This is not to denigrate ex service personnel in any way. I for one think that the mental health support for ex servicemen transitioning from a forces life to civilian is a disgrace. Dishing out discounted rail travel is little more than a diversion

I don't think it's used as a diversion.

We've been years behind the US on how veterans are looked after post discharge. This is one small step in catching up and doing small things to help.

There is a mental health service called TILLS for veterans. They don't queue like in a civvy hospital but have a dedicated treatment path with specially trained head people.

You can't compare the Armed Forces to the civvy emergency services. Very different on so many levels.

And imagine if there were more than one of you making the same journey.
Train would be ludicrously expensive compared to all piling in a car.

Joining the armed forces is a choice, and a job.

We all make a choice to work in specific industries. Why can't I get cheaper rail far for working in a different job?

No.

As always, you can't explain when challenged.

I can't see any reason why ex-service personnel are more deserving of free trains than, say, nurses, but I'm open to any explanation.

It's really not bleedin' obvious, so please do explain.
