On this day 2000 on 17:29 - Feb 5 by Sharkey | How did he find room for Brown in an XI with Mowbray and McGreal? Did he often use three centre halves? |
Yes quite often. Brown was pretty mobile and not bad on the ball. All 3 CBs were very aggressive and kept it simple and would basically funnel it into Holland Magic and Head (Jamie Clapham's nickname). God I hate you Marcus Evans and I hate getting old. EDIT; we also had Venus who would usually play ahead of Brown but I think he had a few knocks that season. He was another excellent player. And he once broke a Norwich player's ankle with a free kick. I wish it was 2001 again. [Post edited 5 Feb 2020 17:56]

As quality as he was he didn't make sufficient impact to take us up. Other quality signings would include a number of loans, McGoldrick, Murphy and Waghorn but none has had the impact Stewart did. Hreidarsson is a good shout because we were on a different level that first season up to what was expected and he was a major reason for that. Unfortunately, being on a different is a major factor in the prolonged fall that followed.

Didn't it end his career? Can't recall his name but can remember the incident. Second thoughts, was it Luke Chadwick?

No Chadwick was the House Elf lookalike who Matthew Bates put through an advertising hoarding on his one and only game for us on loan from Boro. Venus' victim was Alex Notman, i just checked and it did indeed end his career hahaha

Matt Bates looked a really promising player but got a nasty injury himself and never really made it either did he?

I thought Brown was poor on the ball - probably about Chambers's level & usually resorted to a hoof.

Alex Notman. (damn autocorrect) Believe he was a Man Utd academy player like Mulryne was (Mark Robins connection was it?) and highly rated until Veno gavehim the Misery treatment with a set piece. Think he tried to come back but never went anywhere, circles presumably. [Post edited 5 Feb 2020 19:55]

What players we had then! Proper big hard as nails central defenders, fantastically clever forwards and a creative midfield. Marcus Stewart would be worth £30 million minimum today given his age at the time. Player recruitment back then was outstanding.

Player recruitment the following year (the second in the Premier League) was where it all went wrong.

Spent an awful lot of money for not a lot. We only needed 1 signing to keep the others on their toes. GBs biggest mistake as Town manager.

McGreal had been injured during the playoff semis and made it back for the final, remember him and dave Williams the physio hugging like mad walking down the tunnel after

I loved Hermann. Looked like a bit of an oaf, but by 'eck his rampaging runs, with opposition players bouncing off him, be it from centre half or left back were a joy to behold.

Scowcroft roamed around, mainly on the right side of the attack behind the front two. He was superb in that role. We should not have sold him in 2001, a major reason why we were relegated.

Indeed, I seem to remember we spanked them 6-0 or something at PR very early o in the season. One of a few batterings we dished out that year. Forest was another, IIRC.

Brown was a good, solid defender. He was the back up man behind Venus, Mowbray and McGreal (the pick of them) but he played a big part in the promotion season. We also had Thetis who went from cult hero in 98-99 to a clown in 99-00.

The goal he scored on his debut at Barnsley was a bit like the goal at Bolton in the play-offs. Rounded the keeper to his left, pulled the ball back onto his left foot and scored. There were groans from the Town fans behind the goal for both when he cut back again with an open goal to aim for. His right foot must have been weak. On his home debut he scored another fine goal against Huddersfield and then did little (poor form and injury) until the play-offs when he came to life.
