QPR in 1985 Milk Cup 13:54 - Apr 15 with 9504 views | brazil1981 | Those with good memories may be able to help out? Chatting with a QPR supporting mate and we both seem to remember there being a quite a bit of trouble before and during the Portman Road Milk Cup tie in 1985. Unless my memory is exaggerating the whole thing, there was a bit of running battle on the pitch between fans during the match as well the things getting tasty in and around the Sporting Farmer before or after the game? Can’t find any old reports about it on the internet so perhaps I’m thinking of a different game, I know there was a lot of trouble around that time (Millwall at Luton etc) so perhaps it wasn’t a big deal. However seemed a bit bizarre as neither club had bad reputations for violence and it wasn’t as if there was a particular rivalry between the fans before or since!
QPR in 1985 Milk Cup on 14:00 - Apr 15 with 7697 views | Lord_Lucan | QPR tried to come into The Falcon before the game but all that happened was a small broken window. After the game they entered the pitch from the Portman Stand and we did the same from The West Stand. North stand were locked in because of fence / gate etc.

Yes I was in North Stand from what I can remember. Think it was a 0-0 draw so don’t know why it kicked off really!
QPR in 1985 Milk Cup on 14:29 - Apr 15 with 7632 views | nodge_blue | There was from what I could see fighting in the "pioneer" stand. In the part near the pitch where there used to be standing. On a similar note, I remember a game at home to Chelsea. We won I think. But 5 mins before the end about 100 Chelsea fans left where away fans still sit today and just walked into the churchmans. Looking for trouble. And a mini crowd surge of Ipswich fans piled away to the changing room side! [Post edited 15 Apr 2020 14:33]

Wasn't there a rumour that West Ham had travelled up to fight QPR?

No. We all thought they were Chelsea and not QPR as we didn't at the time think QPR had the balls. On reflection it was QPR.

Can remember the Dalian 4-0 game against 'Boro when the away fans did the same thing from the seats.

QPR in 1985 Milk Cup on 16:43 - Apr 15 with 7480 views | allezlesbleus | I remember that, from the good old West Stand days. Was pretty mental on the pitch, after the game, from what I can recall. I think the East Anglian / Evening Star showed a number of photos the day(s) after that as well. I'm surprised someone hasn't found them and posted them. The rumour was that Chelsea were in the Lower Portman Stand, but I don't know if that was any substance to that.
QPR in 1985 Milk Cup on 19:17 - Apr 15 with 7371 views | gainsboroughblue | I was at that game and remember the trouble being on the news (probably late Anglia news) afterwards. I recall most of the trouble in the early 80s from away fans tended to be those who chose to go in the seats in the Portman Stand and they'd come in through the Churchmans entrance late on or after the game as that was always the stand that was opened up so people could come off the street and watch 10 mins or so of football. Bizarrely, I remember it kicking off in the Churchmans concourse with Darlington after a league cup tie on a Tuesday night. Gillingham had strong numbers in a cup tie in the seats too, as did Swindon and Bradford.

Didn't we win the replay 2-1 at Loftus Road?
QPR in 1985 Milk Cup on 23:06 - Apr 15 with 7219 views | Pendejo | I am led to believe some of the transcripts of when the cctv evidence was shown in court is quite funny. Folks complimenting other people's kicking technique. Was unable to get in West Stand, so went in the North. Heard stories about trouble before, but I'd gone straight to the game from home after getting out of work late. There were a few, shall we call them, "independents", there Ipswich based Chelsea nutters and a few Colchester based Spurs fans. And probably others it didn't know of. At the point of the pitch invasion starting I was leaving North Stand by the Portman Road exit, as it kicked off a mate of mine went over the front wall and joined in, another mate suggested we go home. There was some chaos in Portman Road, but then in the mid80s that wasn't unusual. 84/85 season was the maddest most violent I can recall. Millwall at Luton, Bradford Fire, Leeds at Birmingham, us at Naaridge, many other events ending with Heysal. Didn't one of Willis' windows get broken?

Chelsea's semi final defeat to Sunderland in the Milk Cup that year ended in a bit of a riot at Stamford Bridge too. [Post edited 15 Apr 2020 23:21]

Didn't one of Willis' windows get broken? It did...Pretty certain it was Arsenal fans and if it wasn;'t that year it was damn close,my dad was in charge of the building and its general running so it sticks in my mind [Post edited 15 Apr 2020 23:55]

Yes, in 1996 we beat Gillingham 1-0 in the 4th round & the attendance was 13,537 when we were getting 10,000 for League games was remarkable & there were a few thousand Gillingham fans.

I forgot about that game, yeah they did bring a lot. I was, however, referring to an FA Cup tie in '85. We won 3-2. Cracking game. Gills fans were all over the town beforehand.

For the 1996 Gillingham game, they had the whole Portman Stand.... the largest away following since we went all-seater and that record still remains as far as I know. (unless Rangers broke it when we played them in the pre-season game a few years ago, but I think they only had the Upper Churchmans and not the Cobbold as well). Back to the Gills in 1996, and Naylor scored what I think was his first goal for us to send us in to the Quarter Finals against Leicester.

The biggest "Out of the blue" takeover I can remember was Grimsby in the FAC around 83 ish??

Surely must have been beaten since - West Ham in the play offs had 4.5k, plus Lincoln in FA Cup bought loads
