People working from home 21:00 - May 1 with 4702 viewsgtsb1966

Can you see companies moving to smaller premises after this is all over and having more people work from home. I had to ring an insurance company to sort something for my daughter and the person I spoke to was working from home as were his colleagues yet they sorted my query between them in no time . Has anyone found it easy or has it been a nightmare?

Totally agree, I think this will massively accelerate a move towards working from home for people in a lot of industries. Companies will see how well it works and how much they can save on overheads and it’s basically a no-brainer.

It could be good news for disabled people, who have faced unreasonable barriers to work due to difficulties in commuting.

Again, I’m with you. All of our youngsters want to be back in the office. We are in shoreditch and had a big annual social event in the calendar for tonight.

We had zoom bingo instead.

Yep, I think it’s just my annoyance at hearing so many people saying working from home is going to be the future, they can speak for themselves but for plenty of people this is not what is desired.

Desired or not, it's probably going to go that way.

It will cost millions of jobs in heavily populated metro areas. You’re supposed to interact with people face to face other than you’re loved ones you know. It’s not healthy routine for many working from home every day.

Oh, I don’t disagree with you about the social interaction aspects. And in the past few years, the type of work I was doing meant I had to be in face to face meetings in all sorts of places. It was an absolute must. There were other times where I could and did do so much more, productivity wise.

It is a case of getting the balance right. In addition, some jobs will never be suitable for that type of work, but I think people are having to be creative in how they work at the moment and for some that could be very beneficial in the future.

I'm afraid I'm not.

Once organisations see that productivity isn't down, then those ridiculous rents per square foot they're currently paying will come under close scrutiny and eventually slashed. It's what business does.

Business doesn't give a fook about their employees feels, if there is money to be saved they'll save it. That's why it's going that way.

I think you're right its one thing for country folk to telework for a day or two a week but if we all did all the time I cant even get my head around that. On the other hand does anyone else find themselves being more conscientious of putting a full day's work in at home? What's that about

I pointed out at work years ago that the best definition of an office was 'a big expensive building where people go every day to send each other e-mails'.

We should all move to the middle of nowhere and just get an internet connection then. Sounds fun.

It’s not just about employee wants, literally millions of people are unemployed/stood down at the moment because they can’t go to work or function properly without physically being in their work place. A laptop and the internet doesn’t guarantee everyone’s job you know. Do you know how many projects have been suspended etc. Just because some jobs can adapt and function temporarily doesn’t mean it’s the norm.

You think some bright spark wouldn’t have thought of this before to save all this money and it’s just come to light now that not everyone needs to be in an office? Very simplistic view. My company employees 20,000 people (at least we used to) and we are reopening offices when it’s safe to do so.

The flip side of your argument is that their are masses of people who can't afford to live close to where they work, so spend money they can't really afford to spend to commute to a building that they don't really need to be in to do their job.

If literally everyone worked at home there would be very little work to do when you really think about it.

See above, because someone can sell insurance from their living room doesn’t mean there has been some global revolution. Anyway time we tell.

Again, nobody is talking about a global revolution. They're talking about a flexible workforce.

I read a story a couple of days ago about barclays wonderring whether they really need their 7000 person tower in canary wharf anymore.

Commercial property owners must be set for an absolute calamity. What will happen to all the empty buildings? What with environmental issues around commuting, isnt a fair bet that any changes on work patterns might be permanent?

Maybe the empty offices will be converted to residential, if that's the case.

Yes. We’ve been told that home working will be default until September at least unless critical we head down to London.

Been remarkably easy for part, but then most of my team is round the world anyway so makes little difference

Biggest difference for us will be lack of air travel as we can’t really replace part of what we do so easily by video conference

Screw that, when it’s safe to do so I personally want to get the hell out of my flat and back to the office. Whilst I am for flexibility for those who want, especially considering childcare commitment etc cities are the lifeblood of our economies and people working there create millions of jobs. Also the social scene and opportunities for young professionals is why people want to move to certain markets in the first place. Not to mention the inability to train people and communicate, it’s just not the same. Ever been to square mile or lower Manhattan on the weekend? This shouldn’t be a permanent vision of the future.

I’ve said for a number of years I suspect that this may have sped it up people will let leases run out and instruct people to work from home unless there’s a need to. They will rent client meeting spaces in offices going forward.

The company I work for has 5 offices all within a good stones throw from each other in central London. The cost of running those, insurance, people to run the buildings will significantly drop outgoings if shut.

Plus there’s the green agenda also, less train travel, car. There’s also the people aspect, I’ve been spending 3 less hours a day travelling, which has been great, although workload has meant I’m now working more hours but I can still do that time and see my kids have dinner with them get them ready for bed, which I wouldn’t have if I was working until 5:30 in London.

How this would affect the economy, I’m not sure but travelling into an office when you can be in contact with colleagues over zoom, phone calls, is all possible.

The other concern would be people’s mental health and health, would people get enough exercise.

Also factor in bean counters wondering if they have too many people doing too little.... and whether more money can be made by making people redundant and then outsourcing.

Everyone will need to cut costs dramtically - and people are the biggest cost

Commercial Property Owners? That’s very nice of you to not call them by their real title which is “Workshy Exploitive Leeches” I will say :)

Careful Callis, a lot of pension fund funds own a lot of commercial property so those “Workshy Exploitive Leeches” as you call them are actually pensioners and people saving for their retirement.

A collapse in commercial property values could have some severe effects for a lot of people

My boss has already had a conversation with me about home working permanently, I happy either way. Being at home all the time is not everyone’s perfect solution we have some in our company who miss social interaction that an office brings.

Another Newsnight debate from the week had a guest make the point that post virus, we are likely to see businesses relocating out of London to the regions. Driven by cost savings but also the recognition that many workers can work from home 4 days out of 5 with a day a week in the office.

Seems a compelling case to me, save £s on travel, housing, office costs and all with an environmental upside and less wasted time commuting.

We are social animals and a skyped meeting isn't quite the same, but the benefits surely outweigh the negatives?

I basically spent the last year or more of work based at home, one day a week in Cambridge. After several years of austerity, my team was down to one other, who followed a similar working pattern. We'd both be in the office on a Wednesday. Telekits with the wider team everyday (they were in Birmingham, Sheffield and Blackpool) My boss was in Blackpool, so had no idea where I might be. Office phone diverted to the mobile. Face-to-face meetings with the wider team at least once a month.

Saved me two hours a day commuting, money and hassle.

Work smarter, not harder.

God reading this thread is depressing, you all must be enjoying the lockdown! Besides the social aspect of working in the middle of big city, I personally love coming back to flat after a busy day becuase I never really associated with too much work before, now I do. Do you think the scene will be the same in these cities if everyone works from home?

Millions of people worldwide have been stood down and let go because they can’t perform their duties. So many suspended projects etc. The notion that everyone can do their job with a internet connection and a laptop is false (including many “office” jobs). Zoom is also becoming old pretty quick. Job opportunities in certain markets are half the reason people choose a place to work. Training my team virtually is very challenging.

Either everyone on here is in their mid forties and fifties with kids and working in dull retail parks or they’re boring, maybe both :)
