There's a petition running to paint post boxes blue.
If Royal Mail can paint then gold for Olympic athletes then why not blue for the real heroes and heroines.

It's up to you if you wish to sign it.

This

My wife is a sister on a respiratory ward. We're appreciative of these things, but neither she nor I really want her to be supported by clapping or blue phone boxes.

She would much rather people stay in and follow the guidance on social distancing.

If you really want to support NHS staff, sign every petition you see calling for better wages and working conditions, which can be pretty sh it for Nurses and Doctors.

A qualified nurse should be on 40k a year.

That extra £350m a week should come in handy then.

You've seen it.

Everybody else who watches the news sees it.

That's why they do it.

I’ve only seen it because I’m also a plane.

Yep, I'm in absolute agreement and I often find that most weeks when I hear the saucepans clanging for keyworkers and I give a little clap I have a little wonder to myself about if when this is all over there will be any kind of change in how these people are treated by society both in financial remuneration and respect.

I really hope there will be a societal shift but the cynic in me say's that these 'gestures' are probably as close as we're going to get to any kind of acknowledgement or change.

Give yourself a few more years of living under a Tory government Libby and, you will find that you will no longer ask yourself these questions or feel cynical, as the same pattern will become very clear!

Your last paragraph highlights exactly how far any change will go in recognition of how front line staff within the NHS, key workers, such as supermarket workers, delivery drivers, care workers etc, those "low skilled" workers, will be treated. This my not be popular on here, but you only need to read this forum to see the contempt that some in society show towards low skilled workers, when we constantly see how comments along the lines of, do you want to go big, fries with that, used as a put down in an attempt to emphasise the look at my professional position compared to what you do for a living.

Working in social care I'm all to aware of the destructive nature of the Conservative governments. I guess you'd just hope that when something so ground breathtakingly shocking happens it encourages you to think that things could be different.

I certainly didn't expect this government to have an approach quite so influenced by a socialist approach re:furloughing staff. Some will say they had no other option but there's plenty they could have done which would've been much worse so credit where credit is due.

I think what I'd like to see is all people in 'key working' positions to have their wage up'd to the national average, which I believe is around 30k?

This hero-worshiping is becoming embarrassing.

It's one thing to show appreciation, but to be in competition to fawn the most spoils the sentiment.

Better to spend the money, whoever these people are who want to buy the paint, and give it to the services to use on necessary equipment.

If that happened, the average would increase and they would still be below it - I believe current averages are around £35k for full time workers and £12k for part-time workers.

Conservative voters can't clap the blood off their hands and they can't paint over the blood either.

Blood on people’s hands for voting for a mainstream political party. Come off it. Writing wild statements like that isn’t helpful.

There are people up and down the country worried, stressed and in some cases completely not coping. Some of whom no doubt who come on this forum for some let up. So I think you should leave things like accusing people ( some of whom visit this forum ) of having blood on their hands because of the way they vote.

Anyway I hope you’re well at this time. Hopefully more pleasant times are not too far away.

Maybe unpopular, but we should stop with all the ‘gestures’ and just concentrate on supporting key workers by doing as we’re told and reducing exposure to the virus

Agreed.

I'd rather see actual resources and support than lip service and media management. Blue postboxes may be well-intentioned but in practical terms this slides into the latter for me.

Covid-19 is a b@st@rd but it's certainly providing a hell of an audit of a country's health provision, government and the values of its society.

I didn't want to stick my nose in but this grates a bit:

"There are people up and down the country worried, stressed and in some cases completely not coping. Some of whom no doubt who come on this forum for some let up"

I want to paraphrase your words a bit.

There are people up and down the country worried, stressed and in some cases, completely not coping because of this government's incessant persecution and deliberate victim blaming for a decade now, to seek any excuse to punish and hurt and, in many cases, deliberately damage the lives of some people who are struggling and who, frankly, deserve better. Some of whom no doubt who come on this forum for some let up yet still have to face people who refuse to see it and still vote to continue inflicting the unnecessary pain and turmoil.

5 years of bickering and causing divide over Brexit, 10 years of throwing the most vulnerable, foreigners and low paid workers under the bus, homelessness rising and food bank usage increasing.

Some of us have been trying to achieve supporting each other for years with how we vote and were told we lost and were out of touch. Turns out we’re not, it’s just people only care about coming together when they’re dragged under the bus with everyone else they didn’t give a f*ck about just 5 months ago when they went to the polling station.

If people won’t open their eyes and change how they vote then I’ll probably carry on as I am. No offence and not a pop at you (I don’t know who you voted for afterall) but I can live with my views.
