There is a careful and deceitful equivocation going on in the narrative here- probably at Cummings' direction.

I disliked DC for his role in the leave vote. But it is possible to ignore that and judge his actions on their own merits.
Same with BJ. Have never liked him, but can still judge his actions based on what he does.
