Been thinking on Dozzell and i think Lambert just has to make the call that he's playing and go with it. He's a big asset to the club and one of a few players that has potential to hold a lot of value (both playing but quite frankly financial as well). I'm all for winning the right to play and up to now its fair enough BUT we are going with youth and we're at the do it or not point now with Dozzell and the only way we'll know is if we just give him 20 games to get in and find his form. I think we've got to take the calculated gamble on him.

We do a lot worse than build a team around the batch of very promising youngsters we have. That's pretty much our only chance of ever seeing the Prem; to build a team now and let them take us up and carry that momentum into the Championship.

The lack of pre season might hurt Dozzell's chances if PL is reluctant to throw him in but he hasn't had a real chance yet.

Truly impaired.

I don't think he's ever quite looked the same since his excellent first half performance against Birmingham, which sadly ended in serious injury.  He certainly has an eye for a killer pass but often games seem to pass Andre by without him making much impact.  Maybe a run in the team would be the answer but when a manager is under serious pressure for a result, then their patience is very limited towards players that aren't getting involved enough.  I actually think Dobra or El Mizouni might jump ahead of Andre in the pecking order.

Dobra and El Mizouni are different types of player to Dozzell. He needs a run playing as one of the 2 in a 4-2-3-1 where he can be a deep lying play maker and get the ball moving between the lines.

I wouldn't mind all three of them playing together, well worth a try.

Last season was frustrating for so many reasons, and whilst he was mostly ineffectual for us, he was no more so that most of the rest apart from Downes.

That we are another, dismal, season down but with no further development for Dozzell is a massive disappointment. Would far rather have seen him getting game time than the utterly pointless Nolan, and to be honest Huws as well, I thought Huws was back in his pomp at one point, but was very much a false dawn.

I agree but they are not his competition. He is battling Skuse, Nolan, Huws and Downes mainly. At a stretch El Mizouni.

Was interesting readfing El Mizouni interview where he talked about Bish being head and shoulders above everyone in training. Next best was Dozzell.

We have so much talent if we can keep them all fit!! Injuries really have killed us for the last few years!

Ironically if Skuse is going to feature less and Downes is off, it's those two in front of Dozzell who make the most sense to get the most from him.

I think Huws and to a lesser extent Nolan suffered from the lack of identity and consistency from Lambert, and both had fitness or injury setbacks. Add in the energy of the kids and that might see us get going and let Lambert stick to his beloved 433.

I usually agree with what you say Mullet but are you saying that a midfield three of Dozzell,Huws and Nolan would work,I might be misreading your post?

Huws is the only one of those three that can tackle so if you are saying that then Huws will have to do a lot of ball winning.

I do not see what Nolan brings to any midfield other than a two yard pass to someone slightly behind him.

If you are NOT suggesting a three of Dozzell, Huws and Nolan then sorry for potentially disagreeing with you.

I think it's the only way that really allows AD to be that quarter back style midfielder out of the available options. It means someone like Nolan has to make a massive improvement, but we know that anyway.

The ability to move the ball and press teams is somewhere that Nolan and Huws would offer especially with the pace of Lankester and Dobra out wide. Especially as many teams will still rely on the ball over the top retaining it in the middle and moving it accurately into space is something we should be much better at.

Thanks for your explanation.

That might work when we are in possession but I think actually getting possession to start with might be a problem with the lack of tackling ability in that line up.

Nolan was apparently good at League One level in 2017/18 but he did not seem very good to me at that/this level in 2019/20.

I know he had injuries but, in my opinion, he contributes next to nothing worthwhile except giving the ball to someone else. That bit is ok but as he cannot tackle someone has to get the ball for him so that he can give it to someone else.

Dozzell hasn't had his head in the game for a while. Personally I think it's the mental stress his family has gone through over the last year, from his fathers drug driving conviction, money problems, mental health issues and that he had to move in with Andre. It's never easy to see a parent go through such troubles and it's obviously affecting him, I think the club understand his potential and the troubles he's having, so aren't putting him under too much stress whilst still trying to give him a chance.
Hopefully things will get better for the both of them and Andre will overcome that stress which is holding him back currently.

I agree with this, there's no point playing an average L1 player like Nolan if we have aspirations of better, and I haven't seen enough from Huws to show he's getting back to where he was. If we had a good coach I'd like our team to be something like:
______________Holy
KVY__Woolfenden_New CB__New LB
_______Dozzell____Downes
____________Bishop
Lankester____New CF______Dobra

We'd have to shift a lot of other players to afford 3 new signings, so I'm sure it won't happen but we have players who can do a job in those positions.
I know that midfield is a little lightweight, but under a good coach it would be entertaining for us to watch!

From what I saw of his Shrews highlights (only highlights of course) he seemed so full of energy, not necessarily outstanding quality on the ball but always in good areas and often assisting and sometimes scoring.

Since joining us he's looked more of a run of the mill midfielder, and on few occasions has burst into the box to score. It could be the role he's being asked to play, but I just want to see him getting into better areas as he's not all that dangerous playing in and around the centre circle recycling the ball every time.

The problem is positonally and defensively he's not strong enough to play in a two in that system.

Neither of those sides contains Jackson, who was one of very few players to come out of last season with any credit.

Nothing that some proper coaching cannot sort out. Would require Lambert to stick to 4-2-3-1 and not keep chopping and changing players roles.

For me its a balancing act. If Jackson plays, it probably has to be in a front 2, not sure he can play as a lone striker.

If you play with a 2 up top you are probably going to sacrifice a little bit of creativity in behind.

I suppose the alternative that could be used with Jackson is:

Holy
KVY - Chambers - Woolfenden - Kenlock
Lankester - Downes - Huws - Edwards
Jackson - Norwood

or a 3 at the back:

Holy
Chambers - Wilson - Woolfenden
KVY - Downes - Huws - Kenlock
Bishop
Norwood - Jackson

Either way, it looks as though there are players that could offer some spark and creativity that would be left out - El Mizouni/Dobra/Lankester/Bishop

I just think a lone striker allows us to have the best creative options in behind, and I think Norwood would be the better lone striker.

Got to be something along the lines of the second line up for me but I don’t think Lambert will have the balls to do it.

The biggest disappointment from last season was that we just didn’t make any progress in terms of style, identity, formations or youngsters (Flynn and Wolfie aside.) We really need to start building something and some momentum but can’t see Lambert being the man to do it.

Jackson would be best utilised as a wide forward in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, imo. He creates chances making runs in that inside right chanel and he also gets chances coming inside from that area. I'm not sure Dobra and Lankester are both ready to play every week so I'd rotate them on one side and play Jackson on the other.
