I'm not sure I get the fixation with signing new players 10:33 - Aug 13 with 14048 viewsKeno

We have a half decent squad, lots of highly talented young players coming through

if we have manager with the ability the mould theym in a team with an effective playing style and coach them into being the best players they can be ......

..... oh......

Ok, so who are we signing and when!!!!!

Maybe some people would like us to have a *whole* decent squad.

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

Whilst I am in the camp of thinking squad is basically good enough, when the manager comes out and says this:

“But we certainly need people to improve us, we have to try and get somebody in to improve us because last year simply wasn’t good enough.

“Ideally you’d love to get them in now, ideally. But it’s not an ideal world we’re in at the minute, we’re in strange times.”

Then it's clear that the manager won't be happy without any signings and then that will feed to the players and the negativity doesn't help anyone, as per last season when lambert just dragged us down with so little enthusiasm

Apart from the strange times comment, literally EVERY manager says something similar before every season.

If the players get upset by 'we're looking to improve the squad' type comments, they're more fragile than I thought.

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

His negativity and blame shifting are quite frustrating. I still can't get over the way threw Hurst's signings under the bus last season under some gentle questioning about his record here. It was unbelievable.

Just read this thread and tell me about negativity!

Yes, his negativity. He's meant to set the tone, he's our manager, not a disgruntled fan on TWTD. He's not really given us much to be positive about as a fan base has he? We've just finished 11th in the third division.

There's barely a player in the squad who hasn't been signed by Lambert, or had their contract extended under his reign.

24 players given squad numbers

Tomas Holy - Signed
Luke Chambers - New 2 year deal
James Wilson - Signed
Luke Woolfenden - New 4 year contract
Gwion Edwards - Option taken up on deal
Cole Skuse - Signed 2 new contracts under PL
Kayden Jackson - No
James Norwood - Signed
Jon Nolan - Option taken up on new deal
Janoi Donacien - No (techincally signed under Lambert but deal already agreed)
Harry Wright - New 2 year deal
Jack Lankester - New contract
Teddy Bishop - New 2 year deal
Tristan Nydam - No
Alan Judge - Signed, and given new contract
Freddie Sears - Given new contract
Flynn Downes - Given new contract
Arsitote Nsiala - No
Andre Dozzell - Option taken up
Kane Vincent-Young - Signed
Idris El Mizouni - New contract
Myles Kenlock - New 3(!) year deal
Armando Dobra - New deal signed in summer
Emyr Huws - No

So bar Jackson, Donacien, Nydam, Nsiala and Huws they are all *his* players, and of those we are trying to get Jackson to sign a new deal so it's basically 20 of the 24 players given a squad number that are *his* guys

Do you know what the relationship is like between Lambert and the players Joe?

I'm trying to put myself in the mind of a player, and even though you have professional pride, I can't see myself wanting to impress him or play for him, just like Hurst.

Out of all the managers Evans has appointed he's the worst.

He's just been crap for nearly 2 years. Hurst had 13 games and was dismal but at least you could see what he was trying to do playing style, his recruitment was god awful.

Crikey.

Indeed, his job should be making the players better, we have a squad perfectly capable of challenging, look at the changes Arteta made with Arsenal post Emery, they were a shambles under Emery but better management and man management completely transformed them. Obviously I'm not saying Lambert is anywhere near the level of Arteta, but the point of coaching still stands.

Some mangers need to realise that thier job is to coach and improve, not just keep throw signings at it hoping for the best.

Bold statement to say Arteta has transformed Arsenal. They have just finished mid table in the premier league.

Depends on the caveats really, sounds like he could have got rid recently as he didn't get us into the play offs, potentially that clause might still be the case for next season, but we would have to wait a while before things were mathematically clear we wouldn't be in the running.

I get that rationale. We were dropping like a stone and that decision to renew his contract was a poor one.

It just cried that we don't really have a plan or that he's running it on his gut feeling of success.

Completely agree. It is a weird situation with a manager that is desperately hopeless and clutching at straws to put the blame elsewhere but we also have sky generation fans that demand signings and the more expensive the better. Doesnt matter if they are all in the same position or whether that add anything to the team so long as we can sign players for big money

....just appreciate that we need a couple of players in areas where we are obviously weak and know that the earlier we get them the better, for numerous reasons.

Maybe.

I think the squad is still broadly good enough although there are a couple of gaps to be filled - left back and a winger/creator being the obvious ones for me. The latter obviously isn’t easy to find without some investment though, and whilst I think the likes of El Miz should get a lot more opportunities this year it’s a big ask for them to deliver week in, week out

The big problem for me though is that if Lambert is staying (which he clearly is) then clearly we need some new faces in the squad to freshen things up. Otherwise we’re just going into the season with the same (well actually worse) squad and manager as last year and expecting a different result

I think the issue people take with it is the linking of last season's failures with the need to add to the squad, implying that he thinks it is down to the quality of the squad rather than his piss poor management that last season was such a failure. If he thinks that all we need is a couple of signings rather than a fairly significant change of approach from him then we're in trouble.

It's not just this statement though. Ever since he came in he's had a negative tone, going on about the players not being good enough, the club being a mess. Banging on about playing a million games a season, it's all too much, questioning why we should expect promotion. It's been pretty relentless.

Hurst gutting the squad is true but that doesn't excuse Shanbert for the catalogue of failures. If he is taking the job on then it is his role to get a tune and out of whatever we have or find a way to replace them. He has been backed, he was given a fortune in the 1st Jan window albeit getting players in might have been tricky but there is mo excuse for the money wasted. Considering we were league 1 he was then back last season because the squad was retained and the most expensive in the league plus additions. If he wasn't happy he could have moved some on. There are no positives to the Shambert reign and he is the 2nd longest serving manager under ME now I believe? He has failed consistently at everything

No excuses? Really? If I bought you the most expensive trainers and asked you to run a race... but tied the shoelaces together, would you have NO excuses?!

Football supporters are too impatient these days. ITFC has been a sh!tshow for years, and you expect someone - anyone - to come in and turn that around overnight?!

I'm not saying Lambert - or anyone else for that matter - is the answer. But you've got to give them a bit of time.

That's a good point actually Joe. I didn't realise how much of the team was essentially his now. I guess a mitigating factor is he doesn't have much to spend so probably there's a lot of 'sticking with what you've got' about it, even if you'd ideally want better.

Won an FA cup, looked far more organised and resilient against bigger teams (barring the Man City game) Their league finish might not have reflected the progress they've made as a team under him but they will improve next year.

He has given them an identity, they beat City and Chelsea in winning the Cup.

They were in the bottom half of the table when they let Emery go, so he cleary improved things.

They also beat Utd, Liverpool and City in the league, so I would say he vastly improved them.
