But they DID encourage people to eat out, I don't think they ever did that with holidays. Sure they didn't you couldn't go but I don't think they ever encouraged people.

Whereas we had Government ministers touting "Eat out to help out". I mean even the name suggests by doing this you are helping.

So that one is on the Government.

My family, and many of my friends, ate out numerous times during the August scheme, in many geographic locations ranging from Newcastle, Harrogate, york, Nottingham, grantham, Lincoln and my local village pubs. Not one of us has been ill. Amazing what choosing well managed places, then drinking and eating responsibly and following safety guidance can do eh? I don't think you can lay this one on the government....if increased numbers in pubs and restaurants in August drove an increase in cases, it's on those poorly managed establishments and the customers who can't act responsibly.

But their scheme is unlikely to be the whole story as far as the rise in new infections goes.

Obviously, the more people are encouraged to go out and mix in whatever environment that is, it's inevitable you're going to see a rise in cases.

Funny how this started on 1st August but none of the issues with excess cases seems to have arisen until AFTER this scheme ends when less people are in pubs/restaurants because kids have gone back to school, you need to try harder with what you are trying to pin this on

You do realise it's the government who have said it's the increasing numbers in the pubs that is in part driving the increases, don't you? They're pinning it on themselves.

This is also the same government that have said it’s the young people in groups mixing/having house parties with no SD that have caused this spike too.

From seeing young people’s behaviour and my personal experiences of dining out I know which one I am inclined to believe is one of the main causes

They put the blame on young people because it covers their backside and they know it's an easy target as gullible people will believe them due to some sort of resentment against that generation (which has been driven from the same place). Seems like they've done a number on you anyway.

Ah yes you mean the data that tells me that there are 250 more cases per day between Aug 1st and 29th on the 7 day rolling average but since 29th August they have increased 4 fold....... let’s blame it all on people getting a cheap meal in the pub shall we?

At the risk of sounding patronising, the figures kind of prove exactly that it was the rise during August that is causing the problem now. The "R" rate is well above 1. That means that each person infected is infecting more than one other person. So, if you have an initiative that leads to significant increase in social contact, and hence a rise in cases, then those cases will lead to yet further cases in future weeks...

Shock horror - the PM is actually showing consistency for once! He has said today that you should only snitch on your neighbours if they are having a big party. So, breaking the Group of 6 law in a limited and specific way is absolutely OK with him.

Obviously, the more people are encouraged to go out and mix in whatever environment that is, it's inevitable you're going to see a rise in cases.

no its not inevitable at all, as countries like Sweden repeatedly demonstrate, if you just follow the very simple rules, like washing your hands regularly & properly,maintaining social distancing,if you have symptoms stay at home etc etc the virus can be largely contained, certainly at a manageable level that means you dont have to shutdown entire sections of the country continously.

the governments eat out to help out scheme was done to rescue a part of the economy which had it spent much longer in lockdown would have led to millions of jobs being lost, hundreds of thousands of businesses going bust and irrepairable damage to the economy in the short term.

if you look at places that are still maintaining lockdowns, more than 50% of private businesses in their service sector have gone bust, and will never reopen. Imagine 50% of the pubs/restaurants in Ipswich shutting forever, thats the cliff edge they are on, and even carrying on as we are now, its easily possible we could lose upto 1/3rd by the time next spring rolls around.

so eat out to help out was a perfectly reasonable response to that and is in no way the blame of the government as a cause of the recent spike in infections, that spike is down to people and people alone who werent following the simple rules.

and you see that every week in supermarkets the way people completely ignore social distancing, barely any using hand gels anymore when they go in, even the staff have given up in some cases bothering anymore, its ok everyone else is wearing a mask right ?

people criticise the goverment for coming out with such childish catch phrases and rules like the rule of 6, but the reality is it seems Britains dont understand anything but childish catch phrases, and even then, some of them still dont get it.

as for the schools, well thats a losing battle for them, however they setup at the school, just watch how the kids behave when going to or from school. you wouldnt have thought the last 6months had happened, and clearly none of the messaging is getting through to them.

Given nothing has materially changed with Covid (it's still there, we don't have a cure etc etc, it's still contagious) what 'exactly' are people expecting when we relax things?

How can returning to school or work not increase numbers?

How would the Eat out Scheme not result in helping with the increase in numbers?

What do people think will happen when we let 1,000 go to a football match?

You are strongly opposed to reopening it seems. I don't think you saw it yesterday so i'll ask again if you don't mind. Are you in a secure job working from home? Many people aren't so they need to take some risk in order to keep working and bring some money in.

As for the 1000 at football, it really should be a percentage of capacity. 20% could easily be done safely. You could even make it a condition that people have to drive in their bubbles and park on the PR carpark in a special area. We need to stop treating indoors and outdoors the same.

Truly impaired.

Every country in the world is trying to do the same balancing act between unmanageable runaway levels of infection and unhappy closed down economies, but with the best will in the world its going to be impossible to get meaningful data analysed fast enough to control the thing in anything other than a very coarse way.

Until there is a reasonable level of herd immunity, either from vaccine or recoveries, all governments can do is try things out and respond to the effects of their measures as best they can, but to me it looks like garden shed science at best, given the extremely difficult nature of controlling such a massive experiment.

Some administrations will undoubtedly do better than others, but as citizens all we can really do is cooperate and try to be prosaic and as unindignant as possible about the limitations on our activities. Either that or riot.

Perhaps all of these things have played their part in an increase in cases (in no particular order):

Individuals and groups not following basic virus control procedures, e.g.
maintaining a "safe" distance
wearing a mask indoors/where distancing is a problem
regularly washing their hands
using anti-bacterial lotions/wipes where hand-washing not possible;

Individuals and groups not isolating at appropriate times;

The lack of a fully functional, robust and appropriately scaled track and trace system;

The lack of any central coordination around the re-opening of parts of the economy (including inadequate policing of, say, pubs where distancing rules are being flouted);

The lack of any central coordination with regards to the re-opening of schools;

Mixed/contradictory/confusing messaging and advice from government;

The apparent lack of a medium to long term strategy for dealing with the virus.

For me these are all problem areas and the government need to be made to hold their hands up where they have contributed to the problem, despite that problem potentially being exacerbated by the actions of a mindless few.

Indeed they were subsidising people to go to pubs and restaurants

They were also still expecting people to observe social distancing guidance, I suppose it’s the governments fault if people are too thick to keep to the advice such as this?

I guess your going to blame the government for opening up travel corridors but then closing them from high risk countries but not advising people to isolate on return? Oh wait they did advise quarantine on return.... another one that the great people of this country ignored in their masses.

So you don't reckon young people are the worst offenders for ignoring guidelines?

'young people' by whatever age bracket you want to use, are generally most likely to have the sort of social life where they meet up with a few people from different places on a regular basis, often live together in a rented situation where the occupants will have different social groups etc., are drawn to town/city centres etc. etc. The government told people to go out into the town and city centres and go back to work.

The focus is on 'young people' because, as I said, the government made them the focus because they knew their supporters and other assorted gullible people would fall for it, and they have.
