I appreciate some don't like his stand up - I don't know why myself, but humour is subjective. But it's interesting some of those people still love other things like The Office, Extras, Derek, After Life...
I've loved them all, but in different ways. I didn't really enjoy The Office initially, but when you look back it's a brilliant bit of writing. It's subtle, a lot of it, which is why I don't think I initially got the humour. It's weird to say that because now I don't think it's that subtle.
Extras is funny because it's such big stars being self deprecating, which was refreshing at the time. The Les Dennis stuff is incredible. You don't know whether to laugh or cry because it's so near the bone.
I literally did laugh and cry at Derek. After Life I'm not so enamoured with, but I imagine I'll love it in time given what's happened before.
The Golden Globes stuff puncturing the egos of the rich and famous is brilliant too.
Just been watching this with Lawrence Krauss. I'm still agnostic but the logic of both is impeccable.

It's a bit insulting to basically say that if people don't like him then they have short attention spans and thus can't understand the grandeur of his creation but you can of course see it clearly for what it is.
We are talking about other adults here, not kids. People are allowed to dislike things that you think are amazing.
Personally I don't think he's that great, the Office was good but wasn't too keen on much else. Perhaps I have a short attention span and need to watch Transformers Rescue Bots instead as it's more my level.

Transformers Rescue Bots is pretty good, tbf.

He has done some decent comedy over the years, but genius? Overstating things massively.
In this day and age, who would you say comes close?
I'd say someone like Spike Milligan, John Cleese, David Jason in times gone by. But now, I'm not sure. I really can't think of anyone who's tapped into the zeitgeist as well. Quentin Tarrantino? Pop stars are rubbish these days. Might be my age but I can't think of any 'well known person I care about anymore. Other than up and coming politicians like AOC.
Trust the process. Trust Phil.

It's all a bit teenage 'my favourite indie band is better than that RnB crap you like!' isn't it?

Maybe best to start with Rescue Bots Academy and work yourself up to the full show in case some of the characters are a bit multi layered for you

Can you give us a definition of genius to work with first?

The Office is one of the funniest programmes broadcast on TV, Extras was pretty good although having Stephen Merchant as an actor in it exposed who the real comedic brain was of the two.
Since his pivot to banging the drum about ‘free speech’ and ‘being offended’ (I blame him for a decent chunk of the people who bang on about ‘pc gone mad’ or ‘cancel culture’) he’s become pretty insufferable.
Can’t comment on Derek but After Life was overrated for me, too much reliance on inappropriate/unexpected swearing and hard to engage with it knowing he wrote it to directly have a go at people who, in his mind, ‘get offended by everything’.
I really like his stand up, but think you've got his TV shows just about right
1 - The Office - can't be beaten for me 2 - Extras - very good, with an excellent ending show 3 - Life's Too Short - Oops 4 - Derek - Decent enough, but just all a bit obvious for me, lacked the nuance 5 - After Life - Good premise, with a good overarching story but the characters on the side almost make it a sketch show at times. Didn't need Paul Kay in it and not one I'd rush back to watch.
I'd still say I'm a big fan more generally, but a lot of that is due to the credit he has in the bank - his writing is much better when he has Stephen Merchant alongside him

Agree with all that. Best to gloss over his film work though...

Meh. I didn't like it. Comedy is subjective and I found that in bad taste.
Completely get why you might think that way, but I don't think the intent is to mock those with low intelligence, poor social skills etc. Derek portrays someone who is dismissed by many because of how he appears, but in contrast is himself without judgement and is utterly kind and humane. If anything it challenges prejudice by showing someone with an apparent learning difficulty in a very positive light, a champion of those downtrodden and disregarded by society.

My brother is autistic and it was his portrayal of Derek which actually won me around. He absolutely nailed it. The scene with the dog being put down was incredibly. I think he has since denied the character was autistic but i'm not sure why as he played the part so well.
As someone who works with autistic young people I agree completely. I think he wanted to deflect the inevitable criticism for being a neurotypical comedian playing someone with special needs.

You mean it took you 2 - 3 episodes to get it.
If you had more comedy creativity, surely you'd consider footers' suggestion to change your username to The_Smiling_Flasher.
Come on, that would be funnier.
At least it's not The Winking Flasher.

Those are fair comments, although it's weird that you love what he does but don't particularly like him. What he does IS him (or an exaggerated version).
When you compare to the humour of say Michael McIntyre, or Miranda, the fact that these characters are difficult to watch is ironically what makes them so compelling.
I don't cry at anything, not even my nan's funeral. The nearest I was to tears at anything on a screen was ET (when I was a kid). And yet there was an episode of Derek where I was crying with laughter one minute and crying with pain the next. That is very rare.
People who say he jokes about mongs haven't dug deep enough, haven't watched the whole thing, or haven't understood.
I just mean I don't particularly like how he comes across when he is apparently being more himself rather than playing a character, his stand up etc. I find his general manner a bit irritating, like that annoying kid at school.

Really odd take. I've put this up knowing full well people will disagree.
Maybe you think I'm an idiot?
You did kind of insult anyone who disagreed with you though mate!

alongside him ?
Much as Andrew Ridgely is a much better singer when he has George Michael performing beside him
Gervais does not 'set out' to be offensive he is offensive. Anyone who remembers him from the 11 O'Clock show (mid 90s) will remember his stuff about 'spazzers etc'
A truly odious little runt
