Boris to hold press conference later, according to BBC on 14:32 - Dec 19 by ElderGrizzly | Tier 4 will be banned from meeting anyone or leaving the house for anything but essential journeys. All non essential shops will shut too apparently. Essex, London and South East all to Tier 4 and will be enforced by law, not just advised. Tier 1 to 3 only allowed to meet for 1 day on Dec 25th. All international travel effectively banned from airports in Tier 4 areas. [Post edited 19 Dec 2020 14:33]

Essential - so we will still be able to leave home to go food shopping, working, exercising - basically every reason other than to have fun. So not much different to now.

It will be stricter. You won’t be able to travel outside your area and the Police will have the power to stop you. Right now you can travel where you like in reality. Also expecting airports in Tier 4 to effectively be shut to outgoing flights for UK citizens. Won’t be illegal just strong advisory but combination of measures will effectively make it so. This was all still very fluid last night when we got wind of a change of mind happening and my interest was really only in the FCDO impact.

I am all for it, but it needs to be proper restrictions enforced by law for the next week to ten days. Not some Boris half cocked rules but not really rules as its a jolly lovely time.

Agree. How it is planned to work for airports in Tier 4 for example. The challenge will be as it stands, that people won’t be able to travel into or out of a Tier 4 area. And those in Tier 4 will not be allowed to leave home (except for essential food, medical etc), so there are literally no passengers. So no direct ‘law’ change, but the way the rules are put up will make it impossible to travel

Boris to hold press conference later, according to BBC on 14:51 - Dec 19 by footers | This government really is pathetic. For a first-world country our response to this has been dire. No clear thinking whatsoever. I know the situations are very different, but I've seen recent pics from NZ and Aus of people celebrating together again after pulling through lockdown. We could've had similar before Christmas maybe had the government actually been decisive. Money can always be printed and jobs saved; the same cannot be said for lives. I didn’t disagree with the general incompetence point you are putting across but to compare us with Oz and NZ isn’t fair. More comparable would be France and Germany, who are also having to intrude every stricter lockdown measures due to a rapid increase in cases.

Boris to hold press conference later, according to BBC on 15:48 - Dec 19 with 2901 views | The_Romford_Blue | If he cancels Christmas now.. he’s an absolute disgrace. Simply because there will be plenty of elderly people who planned to spend Christmas at their sons/daughters and so have not prepared to be home alone. Expecting them to stay home without any Christmas food ordered in at this late stage is massively unfair.

It was a bloody stupid idea when it was talked about months ago and is still a bloody stupid and dangerous idea, same for Sturgeon up here. It’s one Christmas FFS. [Post edited 19 Dec 2020 15:51]

Boris to hold press conference later, according to BBC on 14:19 - Dec 19 by StokieBlue | Whilst I understand your point the reduction of time is irrelevant if it's still above the time required to be infected. Given this reducing the time even to 1 day isn't going to make much difference to transmission. One day is still more than enough time for something as virulent as C19: https://english.elpais.com/society/2020-10-28/a-room-a-bar-and-a-class-how-the-c - If 6 people spend 4 hours in a room talking without masks then everyone will get infected (5 people). - If 6 people spend 4 hours in a room talking with masks then 4 people will get infected. - If they have the windows open, wear masks and stay for only 2 hours then the risk of infection drops to 1 person. So in the end mixing is either going to be allowed or it isn't. If it's allowed then fine, perhaps 1 day is better but I do feel it's likely to lead to a false sense of security. The government needs to be clear about the risks of transmission in various circumstances within the home and the information simply isn't easily available to many. I fully understand it's very difficult though and everyone including myself wants to see their families. SB [Post edited 19 Dec 2020 14:20]

Isn't there an argument that you get infected on one day you are less likely to infect someone else the following day than 5 days later once the virus has reproduced within you?

Yes, it’s crap. Only days ago the government were threatening legal action against councils got closing schools a few days early. As an aside there’s a marvellous letter from Ron Brewer in today’s Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/dec/18/covid-has-brought-us-a-christmas-l

Those are both island nations that has the advantage of seeing what was going on around the world and were able to take action accordingly. We watched, dithered and didn't do enough. And occasionally said things like 'we'll source our own PPE and testing chemicals because we're an independent nation'. And then ignored reputable companies in favour of ministers' mates.

You first sentence could and should have been us. We are an island, we had the advantage of seeing what was happening in China, Italy and other places. The difference is Australia and NZ had STRONG leadership who made decisions based on stopping the virus not trying to gain press headlines and twitter likes.

Unfortunately the decision might be taken out of their hands. Holland have banned flights from the UK, hard to see any scenario where loads of countries wouldn't follow suit. For instance, if any other random country had a new strain which was up to 70% more contagious the UK would be idiotic not to ban flights from that country. However if Portugal don't ban flights from the UK then they are free to pass through tier 4 zones in order to fly if they aren't from a tier 4 zone. SB

Guess they’ll find out in due course, they have to have negative test before they go which they are taking later today, and check in daily on the island etc on an app. Madeira always been different to Portugal as they’ve managed to contain it so far. We were due to go, this was booked last January - when flights got cancelled we opted not to rebook

Elderly and vulnerable do not Dollers. There are no supermarket delivery booking slots left so someone unable to go to the shops or does not want to because at risk is royally screwed. And how much food is now going to go to waste this Xmas at a time when some people are in food poverty. It's a monumental feck up!
