Purely based on his record he’s the most successful Ipswich manager since Joe Royle.
That’s not to say he wasn’t stubborn, soured his relationship with the fans, signed some poor players and played some dour football.

But you couldn't argue that Mick himself had exactly gone from strength to strength in that time. The average Cardiff fan will not only still have the aroma of the Premiership in their nostrils, but will know nothing about McCarthy beyond that he was successsful too long ago, and used to give as good as he got to the media.
If we were that average, but Town-supporting fan, and Mick had never actually been here, we would be greeting the thought of him coming here with the same delight raised by the prospect of Phil Parkinson, Steve Cotterill, Phil Brown, Ian Holloway etc, etc | |

All Marcus' appointment have in some way been negative to the club.
Keane - spent budget, woeful man manager and broke up culture of club
Jewell - spent budget, wasn't a holistic manager, open defence
Mick - by far the best, good purchases, kept us up and provided a play-off run, very negative style and ethos, disconnected style from academy, released good players, left a team low technically and ability to be dynamic (as stated by players and Hurst), poisonous fan relationship
Hurst - completely out of his depth, bad man manager, wasn't the change in footballing style and tactics/technical we needed
Lambert - just not enough depth of tactical/technical ability, questionable man management again, tried to fix the pass and move issues from predecessors, but seems incomplete

Mick is the only right manager he ever hired. He took us from rock bottom of the league to finishing top 6 in the space of two and a half years. I'm not sure who else you think we could have appointed at the time that would have done a similar job? It does feel very similar, perhaps worse. I don't remember any plans for organised demonstrations being drawn up under Mick, although obviously the situation is unique at the moment with fans not being in a position to show their frustrations at games. | | | |

...some fans are remembering the atmosphere at the end of Mick's reign.
The lack of interest and the negativity.
If we would have been at football for the last year things would have been a lot worse this time around.
It wouldn't just be a bedsheet with "In Mick we tRust" written on it.
It's not easy to gauge the feeling of discontent through social media, it would be easy with 15-20 thousand in the ground.
Although that number would be a lot lower now.
