Interesting quote from Lambert 16:50 - Jan 29 with 2075 viewsIllinoisblue

A lot of their (Crewe’s) young kids have played 50 or 100 games,” he said. “Ours have played less than that, they have got a really good model on that front.”

If only you were in a position, Paul, to replicate that model - and not favour loanees above our own young players.

What a club.

Don't worry. Idris is being schooled by football sumpremo Paul Hurst at Grimsby. You're just not looking at the bigger picture.

We can only dream of having a club as well run as Crewe, let alone a proper football team.

Lambert can dribble out excuses until doomsday. It won’t wash with me.

To be fair Crewe have been doing this for decades and. I think that they have spent all that time bar one year in the bottom 2 divisions, so it only works to a point.

They were in the second tier for a few years in the late 90s, possibly early 00s. Definitely remember us playing them a few times back then.

97/98, 98/99 and 99/00. They beat us at the end of 98/99 at PR which pretty much ended our auto promotion hopes as it was out of our hands.

At least one year in the 2000s as I recall the crazy 6-4 game.

Jan 2004. Two for Tommy Miller and Shefki, Pablo and Reuser also on the scoresheet. OG's from Matt Richards and John McGreal.
The hideously unlucky Dean Ashton on the scoresheet for Crewe.

Just had a look, 5 consecutive seasons from 1997 to 2002 and then another 3 seasons from 2003 to 2006. Best part of a decade in the second tier, which is decent for a club of their size.

I did wonder if there were more. Obviously we'd been promoted by 2000 so I don't have any memory of playing them for a couple of years until we went back down.

I looked at their team and typed up a response to this earlier, but didn't post it in the end as it was a bit anal lol. But in short, I'm not sure what he's on about wrt to the appearances. Most of their 'young' players are 23 (I think they had one 20 year old left back in their team last week). Whereas we regularly have 3-4 under 23s, all of which have as many appearances as these 23 year olds.

So I'm not sure what Lambert was thinking of. Our players 1-2 years younger have as many appearances. And you wouldn't expect our recent academy graduates to have the same number of appearances as players who are 23.

Interestingly (or not) the core of their younger players is in the midfield, so similar to us, with their central 3 all 23 yrs old. Whereas we've got a 21, 22 and 24 yr old in our 3 when Dozzell, Flynn and Teddy play. But they've got an experienced defence behind them.

Oh, and when it comes to Crewe and youth, that's maybe a conversation best avoided after all the revelations!

Yes it’s not like Lambert hasn’t been our manager for *checks notes* 106-odd games is it?

Although unsurprisingly it looks like his statement was made up b*llocks anyway, who’d have thought it?
