That's incredible. Thank you.

What was incredible was how ordinary people, who suffered 100 times worse than anything I have were, stoical beyond belief. I suspect many were understandably repressing quite horrific expereinces tbh.

Is one reason I get so annoyed with people who wish to cut foreign aid having never seen up close the people it helps.

Like I said, great thread :-) Am sure lots of more people have gems to share.

a couple from mark twain which are so apt

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime..

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

another two from mark twain

God created war so that Americans would learn geography.

A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.

The truth is that, to many people calling themselves Socialists, revolution does not mean a movement of the masses with which they hope to associate themselves; it means a set of reforms which 'we', the clever ones, are going to impose upon 'them', the Lower Orders.”
